I think part of the reason for that is that the early Tremec 3550 and TKO transmissions didn't have nearly the torque capacity of the new 500's and 600's. The gears were a lot smaller and you could get them to accelerate/decelerate quicker.

We can do some different things to the TKO's to help the shifting. The cone part of the gear can be roughed up a little bit instead of having the mirror finish. This allows the synchronizer to grab on to the gear quicker and spin it up/down quicker.
