Was your engine builder trying to sell you a transmission that he had? If that's the case, he might have a transmission for a GM application.

The input shaft on the GM spec TKOs is 6.60" inches from the front side of the main case to the end of the shaft. On the Ford applications, the shaft is 6.0" from the front of the case to the end of the shaft, thus you would need a spacer to keep the input shaft on the GM transmission from bottoming out in the crankshaft.
