It's got to be one of two components, either the pickup coil or the module. Ohm the coil to make sure it's not open, if that's OK then it has to be a faulty module.
Since it's new and you had it apart, I'd double check the pickup connections to the module and look for any wires that possibly got pinched during assembly.
Not a bad idea to have a spare module and pickup on hand anyway or better yet an entire spare distributor.
