I was lucky enought to talk to Bob back in 1998, shortly after buying CSX 2189 from a gentleman in Tennessee. He was very gracious in answering my questions and he provided me with a bit of history I am not sure most people know about.

When queried about the choice of the number "33" used on his car, he laughed and said: "Well....part of the money I used to buy the car (CSX 2189) came from a rather large football bet that I placed on Ohio State in 1963. I won that bet and it was due, in large part to the performance of OSU's quarterback (name forgotten). His number was "33", so I thought it only fair that the car bear his his jersey number".

A great guy and an outstanding driver. He went on to drive with another Bob Johnson, and the two were known as the "Band Aid" twins because of the Johnson & Johnson name(s). He also drove for Jim Hall, driving, I believe one of Jim Hall's Chaparrels at Le Mans in 1967 with Bruce Jennings. I also thought he drove the ill-fated 2J "sucker" car, as well.

One of the great Cobra drivers of all time. There is no doubt about that. He will be missed and we will be thinking of his family.
