I'm running 17" X 9" real Halibrand Cobra III wheels with 245/45 tires on the front of my Street Beast and the outsides are not quite even with the front fender flairs at the top of the fender. They're maybe 3/4" in from the top of the flairs. I think I remember the front wheel setback as being 45mm. I have the same wheels with 285/40 tires on the rear.
I have Mustang II tubular front suspension in the car with a great (highly recommended!) QA-1 Mustang II coil-over kit which has 12 way adjustable damping and 500 LB. springs.
I had 375 LB springs in the car first but they were too light and the 500s are perfect.
It sounds like you may have an issue with the setback on your wheels. They should not stick out that much or at all unless they are HUGE tires like 275 to 315 or something too wide for the front or the wheels are do not have enough setback.
I'm running a 351 Windsor with iron heads.
Hope this helps?!
Don
