I've run Backdrafts on the track with and without. I think the optimum is power steering with a Heidtz valve, which can adjust how much assist is in the steering.
The PS is nice though, and I know Backdraft is working on an electric power steering pump, thus no extra pulley and belt spinning around at 6000rpm. Also if you have the electric PS, you have PS with the key on, the engine does not have to be running.
