Like Merv, I thought the decoding of Ford part numbers would give me an idea of engine year. However, it appears that part numbers and casting numbers reflect the original design (or redesign) date rather than the manufacture date.

There was a new generation of Mustangs in ’94 and there was also some changes to the v8 powerplant. The easiest way to determine the difference is visually (assuming all original parts). A couple of sites (below) might help.

According to howstuffworks, an EEC V (as opposed to the 87-93 EEC IV) may signify the newer model, similarly the flatter intake.

Once I was sure mine was from the earlier model, I used the pin out diagrams for the EEC from the Haynes manual to narrow it down to a year. These changed (ever so slightly) over the course of the 87-93 period, but just enough to identify differences.

Of course, all this assumes all the parts that you have are from the same donor vehicle!!

1994 Ford Mustang Engines
The GT's venerable 5.0-liter V-8 got a low-profile intake manifold (to clear the lower new hood), plus aluminum pistons and Ford's latest EEC-V electronic engine controller, all of which upped horsepower by 10 to 215. Torque improved to 285 pound-feet, the same output as the 1993 Ford Mustang Cobra.
