I got ya about the .035 gap and it's location-will check that. But 2 questions:
I don't quite follow when you say "...hit the solenoid... without the starter motor..." It's all wired and grounded and my plan was to hit the key and turn the big wheel.(Assuming there's no gear clash) I think I have a good relationship pinion to ring gear as seen in the pic.
Are you saying I can just extend the pinion without the motor turning it also? Please clarify how.
Also I don't think I can adjust that gap if it's wrong because the starter has a circular flange which fits into the block plate perfectly. I think this gap is factory set.
