When you get to the appointment line to get your number (and wait), make sure the guy who looks like he should have been in Berkeley in the '60's knows that you already have been to the CHP for your VIN assignment. Otherwise, what happened with me, the first counter guy was so abrupt and quick to get me on my way through the system, he sent me through the car line in the back for their onsite DMV VIN inspector to look at your car. That's unnecessary! You have already received your CHP paperwork. He later apologized, but it slowed me down a bit. I brought my car, but as Doug said, you do not need to bring it.
