You can tighten up the play in the rack by loosing the lock nut and turning in the adjusting bolt in the center. That is what it is for. What I would question is why you have play. If the rack guide or bearing are bad then the adjustment is just temporary.

One other thing I would check is the tightness of the I shaft conections. There is history of the bolts being tight but the joint having play in them.

You can tighten the cross bolts to tighten them. I changed my bolts to good flange head class 8 bolts and increased the torque and it tightend them up and got rid of the play in my steering. Just watch the shafts and turn the wheel and it should show up if they are not tight.
