The windmills are the new style. They are transported in and assembled on site with large cranes. Most are the three blade type - and do look like that squirrel cage - and are very high.
We have managed even through the drought to keep the tanks filled. Now the rain has kept them over flowing. The biggest impact on us is the amount of water that had been running of the roof and down the street previously..

Most of the wind generators have underground lines back to sub stations that are well hidden - a planning requirement.
I'm not sure on the environmental thing, as we do not have large numbers of them yet.
