OK, here's the scoop according to Ford Racing:
The pump that Terry identified (M-8501-C50) will work with the early timing covers. The "minor modifications" necessary would be for possibly adjusting the spacer/shim thickness(es) for the bracket system (alt., p/s, a/c, etc.). Not a big deal.
The reason that pump was not mentioned for the earlier '60s - '78 engines is because the reverse-rotation system wouldn't normally be found on those engines.
