Default It's always something!

I have a toploader with a Hurst Competition Plus shifter. I have the adapter that converts a hurst shift arm to a reverse Mustang shift arm with the fake reverse lock out handle. Now my problem....the distance from the mounting surface for the shift arm to where the shifter exits the tunnel is 3.5". I can't raise the rear of the transmission any further. Any similar experiance or suggestions on dealing with this? Is cutting a big hole and using a big boot the answer?
