I've gone back and forth on jets, squirters, and set the floats, pump arm and idle screws this week. The carb was a little out of adjustment everywhere but not bad. Idle screws were at 1.5 turns and I ended up at 2 turns out for max vacuum. I settled on 71 Pri. and 74 sec. jets.
I did have a slight surge on top and a slight hesitation just as you open the throttle from stop light to stop light. The 71 took care of the hesitation. I upped the squirter to 40 from 37 but it didn't seem to take care of the hesitation so I went back and the 71 was the ticket.
I went up to a 75 on the Sec. and the surge was gone at WOT. I went to a 74 then 73 and the surge came back slightly so I settled on the 74.
I drove up to 2000 feet and it ran just about the same. Holly states one jet leaner for every 2000 feet. It ran good so I must be close. I will be in the thick air of Monterey/Aptos for a couple of days next month. If it exhibits any lean symptoms, I will up whichever jet I need to and that will be it. If it runs good there I'm done.
It never ran as good as it does now and the throttle response was always a little sluggish. Now, I don't know if the new mufflers caused the need for the carb fiddling or the stock pipes did also. I'm not going back to see!
I've done a ton of motorcycle carbs and the Holly is quite complex in the adjustments compared. I've spent at least 20 hours on the carb this week between changing and testing, and feel I have a grasp on the symptoms Holly's produce. I'm quite sure if someone threw a Holly at me I could dial it in now. This was fun and challenging and as my dad used to say "It runs like a striped ass ape!" Not sure what a striped ass ape look like though.
