Yes, put a little mark about 1/8" (I'm guessing, but you could do the math to be more accurate) just before the 40 mark (CCW from the 40 mark...to the left loooking at the front of the engine ...towards the TDC mark).

There's a lot of good suggestions here, but I'd try to get that timing at least close before messing with fuel, carbs, etc. I have no idea why Pony Carbs made that timing adjustment procedure suggestion. It's in their video and I think also in their paperwork.
