Something doesn't sound right. As you look at the front of the balancer with the #1 cylinder at TDC on the compression stroke, the timing marks should be about 10-11 o'clock. The timing pointer should be in the same area. It should be easy to see the marks by looking down over the top of the alternater, but under the water pump.

Many balancers have two or even three sets of timing marks. I have heard that some of the Ford crate engines do not include a timing pointer. You might have to buy or make one.
