302/351-W starters have two different "nose lengths". The one for an automatic trans being the shorter of the two, sometimes it will barely engage a standard trans. flywheel and sometimes it will not,depends on the bellhousing............either way, get the correct one for your application........

I was given one for an auto trans and it would not engage the flywheel, brought it back and the other guy checked and said first guy gave me the wrong starter, he got one for a standard trans. and putting them side by side you can see a distinct difference in the nose length.........from then on, I always specify the trans. type when getting a starter...........
