You don't provide a lot of specific information, like where you're located, what kind of kit it is, or the extent of the items to be "finished up". So while the number sounds really harsh, it's hard to make a good call as to how badly this guy is really treating you without more info. If you're planning to re-negotiate the final number with him you need to have your facts in order beyond, "I know a guy that would have done this for X".
