Too Loud! Decibel levels?
Has anyone ever been ticketed for side pipes/exhaust being to loud? I'm contemplating replacing my ceramic coated/glass packed old units with open pipes I purchased - for use on the street. When I pass cops now they just give me either a thumbs up or I wish I could pull you over look.
My current set-up is about 8 years old and upon completion of my engine, again, I noticed a rattle in the drivers side exhaust pipe. While the engine was out I purchased a set of stock length track pipes with no mufflers or baffles. My current pipes are definitely illegal, the question is how much more illegal would I be with the open pipes?

You will get pulled over with open pipes
The only time I ever have been stopped was in the first 15 miles.. just had to take a good buddy for a spin the first dry night after she was delivered. Car was not even registered and we kept the speed down but the cop (state patrol) was hanging out near a school and heard us go by
He was so amazed by the car and her brand new condition that he just gave the usual mumbling "get it registered asap" stuff and let us go.. one of the good guys. I now have turbo specialties baffles (there's a thread here with the install pics, if you use that search term) and she is "quiet" (for a cobra with SS sidepipes) unless I stomp on the loud pedal.
Yesterday some young guy with a souped-up VW bug made a point to catch up to me at a light and rev his motor.. I basically ignored him.. (like a rottweiler ignoring a poodle ) he turned left at the light and I remained, but after he left the road construction crew nearby was staring at my car with looks like "you shoulda' showed him who was boss"
So I revved my motor just a bit and they broke into grins.. one guy said "That sounds a LOT better"

BIB, on a another topic - I run a Richmond Gear with a Hurst shifter and it stinks. I hear that the six speed comes with the "Long" shifter - how do you like it and what are the shift characteristics? Long is supposed to be the shifter of choice. Thanks for your replies.
ps. Were your original pipes completely open?

Yep, ...
The pipes were open SS "cop callers" They actually hurt my hearing in normal driving.. not something I enjoyed !
They still sound powerful and the spirals will not wear out like glasspacks...they can be removed for cleaning but I likely will just brush and hose them off and then they quickly will be re-covered in soot which mostly protects them against corrosion.
I love the 6 speed shifter.. after the tranny broke in (about 2,000 miles) it became a joy to run thru the gears. I now have over 2600 miles on her and soon will be able to go to synthetics.
(To clarify, at a dead stop 1st is a mild "push-in affair but when rolling all gears are smooth and it is getting better)
Although I have doubts as to how much the Richmond can take before it gives up the ghost, with 600 + HP

It's Thursday Jeff shouldn't you be starting your weekly trip? Did you have the Hurst on the tranny to make that comparison? I am not happy at all with my current shifting and was shocked to see the price of the Long shifter - $600! It better be worth it! If I do the swap it wouldn't be unitl this winter when I'm likely to pull the engine. Do you have yours in yet? Let's get together - I was just over in Marietta (square) area this afternoon for B-Ball & haircut. Take care.

Cracker,
I have Borla center sections, so I'm told by Unique, and am told it's good for an additional 50hp or so over their standard pipes. My car is definitely louder than other Cobras but not overdone in my opinion.
If you contact Allan or Maurice at Unique, they will probably help you out if this is the route you want to take.
