September Ride ??

I'm ready to try this again. Who's up for a ride or two during September? I would still like to make the run we disscussed last month. My bandage should be off within a week or so and I'm ready, I need a Cobra fix in the worst way.

Let's pick a day, and plan a trip. Sept. temps should a little cooler, and we can get the club (ACC) together.

I would suggest we meet for breakfast, somewhere halfway convenient to all???, meet early AM, eat, and head off before it gets too warm.

I would suggest a meeting spot somewhere in Roswell area? Perhaps close to 285/Hwy 9. We could meet around 8-9 AM grub up, and hit the trail.

Anyone know a good breakfast spot with plenty of parking?

I'll be glad to put together a trip route---just need to a spot to rendezvous.....

We need someway to communicate other than this thread, it takes to long to get everyone on the same page. Emails would work better for roll calls and planning. For maximum participation we need good dates and look ahead schedules.

Andrea and I are pretty open until we get Eric's fall baseball schedule, but we can work around most any game as they are allmost all in the north Ga area.

How about a poll for a day (Sat or Sun) and weekend. We should do several over the next 6 to 8 weeks.

Next weekend is the Atlanta Historic races (HSR) at Road Atlanta where you can see our own TC and Johan tear up the track. We could turn it into a Cobra cruise. Otherwise I can probably make most weekends.

Oh yeah, come watch me as I out manuver Gene Felton into turn 5, or as I late brake Lake Speed into turn 1, or as I pass Ron Hornaday in turn 12. This should be good ! I hear those guys are scared I'm running with them !
Honestly, If I don't come in dead last I'll feel like I won Daytona.
The pits will be off limits to non participant's cars, but perhaps park along the back straight in a group and pull out the folding chairs. You can get walk pit passes, and lets hope I am car 94 instead of 49, or I would be going backwards. I may go extra slow so that I can run with the leaders a few times during the course of the race as they pass me. I've put on the rear view side mirrors from my excursion so I should be o.k., but if the wind folds them in, look out !

The Winston Cup cars are group 8, and you will really not want to miss the 60's muscle cars that run in group 5. TC is running his Porsche in Group 1, While Dave Crace will head up group 13(Act Up Atlanta on Bikes).

I forgot to mention that car clubs can do track touring (driving around the track at around 60-70 mph) if you car has mufflers for some nominal fee during lunch, check the schedule.......and remember, the track runs clockwise.

In regards to "rev matching" mentioned with the Jerico trans, what does that mean (or how)?

Cracker, it won't work that well in your BMW, but in a trans. with straight cut race gears and dog rings, you do not have to push in the clutch to shift, up or down. All you have to do when up shifting is let off the throttle and select the higher gear, then re apply the throttle, and it shifts to the higher gear with no lag or loss of momentum, just instantaneous gear changing. By letting off the throttle, you matched the rpms that the engine will be running at in the next higher gear. Say you are in 3rd gear at 8000 rpm, you lift off the throttle, and pull the shifter back from 3rd gear position to 4th gear position. As the shifter passes through neutral, the revs drop to about 5000 rpms and as you click into fourth, and press back on the throttle, you have matched the rpms for 4th gear and can run it up to top end.
Now a turn is coming up.
It is a 2nd gear turn and you are doing 180. Better slow down a bit.
Lift off the throttle with right foot as you apply braking with the left foot, eventually STANDING on them ( you can push a brake pedal much harder with your left foot than your right foot, try it some time...)2 seconds have gone by and now it is time to down shift from 4th to 3rd, so ease the shifter from 4th to neutral, now depress the gas pedal and rev up the engine to 8000 as you apply pressure to the shifter towards 3rd gear, and as the revs of the engine approach 8000 the shifter will pop into 3rd at the time when the revs match. Now let off the gas and allow the engine to help slow you down . this all took about another 2 seconds. Now it is time to repeat the down shift but this time it is into 2nd gear. You are still wanting to slow down a bit, but the brakes would be too much, so you can let off them now. This means you can blip the clutch to ease the transition to second, so do everything like before, but take a slight 1" jab at the clutch to take the torque off the input shaft of the trans.
Hit second as the engine revs to 6000 so that you have 3000 rpms to get you out of the corner putting you at 9000 rpms and ready to go back to 3rd as you come out of the corner and accelerate away.Another couple of seconds passed so all of this happened pretty quick.
Now add in the factor of the other cars right in front of and behind you doing the same thing and it gets busy.

No Cracker, I have no Idea how to shift a Cup car. I was talking about my wife driving the kids to school in a Dodge mini-van when she is running late ...
