I wanted to see how much power it took to turn a hp/hv oil pump so I made a tool hooked it to a 1/2" drill and stuck it in the hole. (assembled engine) Fella's I'm telling you it damn near snached my arms out of socket. Twisting by hand I could feel resistance but add in the drill and some rpm's and it's a load. I tried 10/30 oil then went up to 50 wt. You would not believe the additional power it took unless you tried it yourself.

Damn it, it happened again at about 1100 miles on the new distributor and oil pump. I am going to set fire to the whole thing and claim insurance!

Before you get out the gas can and matches one small question. After the first gear failure did you check the gear on the cam? If it was damged it will eat the new gear.

That is actually what I am about to do...tear the whole thing down and start from scratch.

Don't go overboard. If you are having trouble with the lower gear I would bet it is not a fault of the pump but of the gear or cam.
I would pull the front cover and cam as well as drop the pan to check for metal. I would not tear the whole engine down because of this type of problem.
