Do we have to register for something if we want to spectate the Mitty but show up with a Cobra and do some laps? Do we put McDaniels down for club affiliation? I notice the participant pre-registration is due by yesterday, is that for racers or should someone wanting to do laps have done that?
Sorry for my confusion but I live for this event and don't want to screw up by something like not even filling out the form that was due 4/15 until 4/16

regarding the parade laps at the Mitty. I called to confirm iof Cobras would meet the quiet restrictions and the answer was NO. Looks like I'll be bringing one of my Vettes instead.
In regards to pre regristration the last date was April 14th. You can still get a ticket on race day but you will need to line up. No big deal. Looks like if you want to do parade laps you'll need a car with a muffler.

So is there a formal meeting spot, time, day or just show up and look for the spot? Any consensus on who is going?

I'll be there from Augusta. Don't know if it will be with or without Cobra. Depends on weather. I'm staying at a B&B in Gainseville.

If this is of interest to anyone:
www.historicmustang.com/pressrelease.html
please stop by to pay me a visit. I will be working the NASA tent with Jim Pantas at the Mitty. I will not be racing for the first time in 8 years at the "Mitty" so I will need some visitors to keep my mind off the track activities. Lets talk about Ken Miles and Dave MacDonald racing Cobras at Augusta 40 years ago last month.

That is really interesting. Tell us some more about how the track came to it's current condition. Could it have been bought ? When was it last used and what was it's downfall?

Johan, please go to www.augustainternationalraceway.com when you get a free moment. The 3 mile road course, which is still 90 % intact was purchased by the county after laying dormant for 30 years. It was part of a four track complex: 1/2 mile oval, drag strip, micro kart track and the road course. The drag strip is still with us but is on private property. The oval and kart track are gone.
Diamond Lakes Regional Park is being developed in the infield of the former road circuit. I have a diagram up at the site that shows what will take place there over the next few years. Two state of the art six million dollar ball fields are currently in place along with walking tracks and fishing and areas to picnic.
A new 12 million dollar library/community center is being constructed next to the former pit lane beginning next month and our memorial will be placed in the courtyard of the new library when it is completed in 18 months. This September the monument will have a temporary home in the ball field complex.
The road course was only used for one racing season - 1964. Three total events were held: NASCAR race November 17, 1963 and two USRRC events on March 1, 1964. All three winners would loose their lives in the next few years: Dave MacDonald just 10 weeks after the March race at Indy. Ken Miles a few years later at Riverside and "Fireball" Roberts six months after his NASCAR victory.
Six of the top seven finishers in the NASCAR race would not survive to race the next season: "Fireball" Roberts, Dave MacDonald, Joe Weatherly, Jimmy Pardue, Billy Wade and Larry Thomas. The seventh driver was Ned Jarrett.
Closure of the course is not really understood. More than likely money as this is NASCAR country and they still struggle with the road race concept. Our feelings are that without "Fireball" Roberts, who helped develop the circuit and was on the Board of Directors, NASCAR was not interested in another road race.
The track will be developed into a walking and biking trail over the next few years.
We would love to have as many Cobras as possible at the dedication. There will no organized activity other than the dedication but there is plenty of room for cars and picnics.
Thanks for everyones interest and come join us on September 11, 2004 for this very special occasion.

It is amazing that there are two such "one-race "courses in GA, the other being the one on Hutchinson Island in Savannah.
By the way, I enjoyed your Mustang site. I just sold my old # 65 to Gary Jones, and already miss it.
See you at the Mitty

I plan to attend Sunday for sure and possibly Sat. The early weather forecast looks like 40% chance of rain both days. How many of you are taking your Cobra and does anyone want to hook up mid morning Sunday? Where will the coral be?
Chill you did get two tickets right ? Put it on my tab and I'll take care of it when I see you next.

The corral is going to be in the infield,
from Rob Ginn: "go through the entrance and up the hill and turn over the Suzuki bridge and look for Cobra parking".
Three days 'til the Mitty!
