Title problems

Problem I have found a really decent Classic Cobra at a great price but it is titled as a 2001 in Ohio. Now being titled in Ohio as a 2001 isn't a problem but here in Ga. the cleanairforce dosen't like it. The owner has offered to unlist the title and have it reissued as a Salvage or rebuilt salvage. Will a Salvage rebuilt title fly here in Ga.? I don't care how great of a deal it is if I can't drive it it's not worth it. Any ideas or comments?

You do not need a title in ga for a car that old. All you need is a bill of sale for your favorite year cobra from the owner.

Yes: a Bill of sale and they will iussue you a registration, no title for cars older than 1973(?). A title is an optionmif the car already has a title and you want to use it,

A salvage title may need an inspection etc.

Get a bill of sale with the serial number and year. Should be no problem. Lemme know any problems/questions. cb

I suggest you reconsider. re titling your car as salvage to aviod the clean air folks is risky and clouds your title.

In Hawaii a Salvage Title requires a special inspection by a licensed state inspector. There are VERY few of these guys and guess who THEY work for? Body shops. There not interested in the some guy off the street and have no idea who built the car or how it got a salvage title.

I finally got a salvage title car I rebuilt inspected and approved after 6 months and some serious "grease" to help the process along.

I would never do that again!

Regarding the salvage title. I suggest you use caution as very few folks would knowingly purchase a branded or salvage titled vehicle (making it hard to sell) and very few lenders will loan money on one either. A salvage title is very poor colateral, ask any loan officer. Doesn't sound like a wise trade off.

As far as I know ... there's no such thing in Georgia as a Salvage Title. Gordon, how bout listen to the people who live here - not people speculating from the West Coast? Get a Bill of Sale, walk into the tag office, and ask to register your antique auto. As Chip pointed out, Titles are not required here on vintage vehicles.

Here is a link to Georgia DMV title info. As Rick and others have said I think you will create a world of trouble for yourself if you try to "salvage" the car. Doing it by the book is the only safe way. Just my .02

What ever you do make sure you don't use any title services, salage titles, or anything else that does not seem correct. Find a club or someone knowledgeable on replica registration in your area and go by the rules.

I noticed you are from Atlanta. I've done a search and noticed you and kajun's post. I am in the market for a Cobra, but I am concerned about the tag/emissions thing in the Atlanta area.
It seems most of the cars I've seen FS are titled as 1992 and up. Wouldn't this require an emission inspection? Can you install a older (maybe 65-70 small block) engine and have it titled as an older car and by-pass the sniff test?
I'm mostly interested in a track car but would like to have a tag for occasional cruising and testing.
(tag on my '65=$21/year with no sniff test &
tag on my '94 is $120/year with a $25 sniff test)
Any help is appreciated

Go to Lynns post that has the link to DMV read the requirements for a title then go to the cleanairforce.com web page. They go by the year of manufacturer for the car not the engine. I determined you can not play games with these people so I'm in the process of buying a Fl. car titled as a 1966 Cobra. Good luck

There are ways around it - and then there's not. Then there are ways it doesn't even matter what you have.

If tagged as the year completed in the metro Atlanta area (13 counties I think total) - you will have to pass emissions. The Clean Air Force will make some exceptions for your Kit - but you're still required to meet a idle and 2500rpm sniff as well as visual inspection. It could be worse, they could make you meet OBD-II standards (1996 up vehicles) - but they don't. The rest of the 140+ counties in Georgia don't require emissions what so ever.

Georgia requires you to title a 'kit car' as the year it was completed. Georgia doesn't require a title for tag purchase on a vehicle older than 1985. You can just walk into the tag office with a Bill of Sale and get a tag.

If you buy a kit car that was titled as a '65 Ford' in another State ... Georgia will re-title it with a Georgia title as the same year ...

Heck - I'm sure if someone high up in politics starts seeing how hard it is to own a Replica in the metro Atlanta area .. their requirements would be diminished quite quickly. I've seen a few laws do just that (ie: seatbelt law - not required to wear one in a Pickup Truck).

Gordon: Was the car you were looking at in Ohio happen to be in the Columbus area? I know of a dealership there that was doing "salvage titles" for people..........stay away from THAT. Just asking for trouble.

This is all you need to know! My friend was in and out of the tag office in 15 minutes. Your bill of sale must match a car that they have in the computer. He used 1965 Shelby Cobra.

That law for seatbelts was for the convience of the Democratic majority leader for his pickup. Since he retired the law was changed.
Lots of ways to skin a cat, but the salvage way is really a stretch. WhenI asked my insurance agent they said they wouldn't do a salvage.
