Tremec trouble
Starting last week after the Ford show I started hearing what I feared was a rod knock or lifter knock...very faint and only noticable around 3000 rpm. Yesterday I found out the hard way that it was not the engine at all, but someting came loose in the tranny. I'm not sure what but it kicked out of 3rd and now makes a he!! of a racket. I nursed it home in 1st and 2nd and have not torn it down yet, but am wondering if anyone might know what could have come loose...sychronizers, throw out bearing???

From what you describe it's not the throwout bearing but I'm clueless beyond that. How about 4th or 5th gear?
Better that its the tranny than the motor.

Hmmm, gear shaft or bearing within tranny related to 3rd gear? If it was your throwout bearing, it would make noise regardless of gear. Same for U-Joints, but do check your driveline U joints as well while you are under there. do you detect any play in 3rd gear if you get in and out of the throttle (i.e. gear teeth themselves bad)?

Thanks for the notes and tremec site. TC, what 3rd gear...it won't even go into 3rd. 4th adn 5th work, but 3rd is shot. I'll post pics after I tear it down.

synchro or maybe shifter fork would be my 'guess'
I'm in the same boat though - sorta - my tranny ate a speedo gear then immediately started whining so loud that it sounds like a supercharger. I figure the rear seal went south. What sux - the only way I see to get the tranny out is through the top-side. Hello winter project.

That is awesome, don't know if I told you, but I did Schutzhund training in Orlando for about 3 years and love working a good dog. Nothing like biing hit full speed by a large Shepard or Rottweiler on the bite sleve...almost like snapping the Cobra into 2nd on a corner!

Yeah, you had mentioned that before. Most of the Patrol dogs in this area are Belgian Malinois - intelligence/agility and flat out nasty on a bite. Mine (blk lab) is a detector only - but he's more than outstanding when it comes to 'finding' the stuff.

I just had a Tremec 600 put in my 351 Windsor, and my used but fine 3550 Tremec (six fluid changes) is up for sale, the Olthoff's have it, if you want it, along withever it comes with, perhaps the driveshaft, bellhousing, i don't know, you can call Mark Ray or Dennis Olthoff and work something out, i don't know what they are asking for my Tremec. I had new synchros' put in a year or so ago, by the way. Has a short shift TKO shifter on it.

Well, I finally got around to tearing down the T-5 last night and she is completely trashed. If you can't make out the pic, that is what is left of third gear...toothless! Input shaft bearings are shot which probably let to the gear failure, oh, not to mention that the fool that built it used gear oil ! I guess I should upgrade anyway, but am going to check into the cost of rebuilding this one.

MZHUN,
I don't know what year your T-5 came out of but those T-5 that were in the 83 and earlier Mustangs are considered very weak. The rebuild kits are probably around $100. I have a friend that has became quite good at rebuilding T-5's. He really thrashes them hard for awhile.

I would really like the T-600 but the budget is a little tight for that now. I will probably rebuild this one and trash it again, and finally drop the cash.
