Default Got my track pictures from NASA event....

I survived the first outing on the track in the Cobra... It took alot of self restraint to not get into it too hard the first time and to wave others by... but I kept reminding myself that I was driving the Cobra home.... Thanks to Robinson Racing for the suspension set-up, the car handled great!

What FUN!!!

Looks like turn 5 at Road Atlanta. When did you run Chill? How are the run groups set up? Where do they let you pass? I have never been to a NASA event so I'm kind of curious. The Cobra looks good on the track. Looks like you were in first

Great stuff Clyde and happy you used all your adult restraint and skill to keep all 4 wheels on the course.

Correct this is Road Atlanta and I ran with NASA in HPDE group 3. There are 4 groups. HPDE 4 is instructors and racers. Groups 1 and 2 require in-car instructors, they expect group 3 to know what the line is and they let you pass anywhere there is a wave-by. This was the NASA event on August 14-15 2004. I only rant the 14th since the 15th was my son's 10th birthday party.

DC - looks can be deceiving.. I think I was being lapped!

TC - you're words were ringing in my ears all the way around; ".....careful, these things can jump up and bite you..."

Clyde, the 1st pic shows (turn 6?) almost as if the track was wet/damp. Was it? If so, many kudos.

I think that was at the top of the hill somewhere in the turn 3-4 area and the track was dry. It was threatening and I kept thinking of the last time I was at RA in the M3... it was wet in the morning and that was interesting!

Nice shots and the car looks great!

What did they do to the chassis?

Thanks
Rick

Rick,
According to Barry, they just 'got all the wheels pointed in the right direction'... but they did a good complete alignment, set the ride height, and set the corner weights on the car. No fancy alignment computers, just a guy who knows race cars and does good work.

...definitely made the car feel much more solid. I am looking forward to the SVTOA track day at Talledega GP Raceway 9/18.

Thanks for the information. No major changes just a good tuning of the existing bits. Something that is often overlooked.
Thanks again
Rick

Look like you were having a ball!

Don't you just LOVE Road Atlanta?

It is my 2nd most favorite track!

My favorite track is Road America (Elkhart Lake)

You are so lucky to have the new NASA chapter there now. I have been running with them for 3 years here in AZ. Sure wish that we had cool tracks like Road Atlanta.

A friend of mine runs a Porche 911 with PCA and has just joined the NASA chapter there. He ran in the race group that weekend and sent me a link with some photos. I saw you in there several times. Here is the address. http://www.bgphoto.biz/nasa.html

I run in HPDE 4 and was curious what is a good lap time for a cobra at Road Atlanta? The 911 is well prepared and turns 1:42

I ran that weekend as well. I was in HPDE 2. My lap times without traffic were 1:56. Hit 135mph on the back streach.

My toy is an FFR also; #111. I have a 302 that pulls 300+ to the wheels and the 17"Toyo RA-1's help a lot to make it stick. Other than that it is a street car.

As my friend lives in Atlanta and I live in AZ we don't get to run against each other. Our only battles come via email and photos so I was curious on the times. Tell me about the set up on your car. Tires, engine, suspension; street stuff or special set up for the track? Running in HPDE 2 limits where you can pass too. I would really love to drive there. All the tracks out here are flat. Have you tried running at Barber? That looks awesome too.

1:42 is a very respectable time for a production car at RA. I just completed the Panoz GT school there, and the fast guys (significant racing experience) were runing 1:51s in the Panoz GT-RAs, which are good handling but underpowered little crates.

To put it into perspective, the fastest GTS cars in the ALMS run around 1:21, and the absolute lap record is around 1:11 (Audi turbo V8 prototype).

Regardless of lap time, I bet that Clyde's FIA won the swimsuit competition.

My car is a street car as well. All I add for a track event is a set of Komho's and HP brake pads. My set up is 600lbs springs in the front 3-link with 250lbs springs and VMP sway bar in the rear.
I have had this car for 4 years and this is the best set up yet. You have one of the best setup guys in your back yard. I have talked to Gordon Levy several times and he has helped me alot.
