Atlanta Club Cobra: What's it gonna be?
We need to have a get together. How about a rendezvous near Cumming/400 or along 575 and a day trip to the mountains and lunch in Helen or similar where they can't cook?
Car show at Riverstone?
Mitty swarming of Cobras in 2 weeks? Gives you something to look at while the Cobra is parked. A good drive for most in metro ATL.
Swarming of Cobras on strip joint. See above comment.
Drive one hour to a private track and have at it for a day?
Attend brand X's autocross and at least feel the limits of adhesion.
What do you all want to do? Let's discuss.

Mike, sounds good. After a quick slave cylinder transplant, I'll be good to go.

That sounds great! What do you have in mind?
The Mitty is definately the one thing everyone should attend, it's the best part of living in the Atlanta area! I wonder if Rob will have a corral setup for everyone to gather at?
Tony, let me know if you need clutch bleeding help.

OK. I'm a new guy, what's the "Mitty"? I'd like a chance to meet with you guys, but I'm coming up from PTC, so I need time to get around ATL, what time do you normally meet?

The "Mitty" is a historic racing weekend at Road Atlanta. It's different than a typical race weekend, it's like a big festival. The paddock is full of historic race cars and you can stroll amongst them. The sprawling infield area is where you would go to park, there are some "corrals" that are areas that clubs might reserve for members to park their cars. We have McMichael Motorsports who in years past would have an area where you could park your Cobra or whatever you drove. You can just drive along the infield roads and spectate from various parts of the track. You'll probably see ladies wearing dress hats as well as a redneck or two, overall it feels like a nice classy event. You don't need to be a race fan to appreciate it. They have a lunchtime spectator parade where anyone can drive their car on track at a relaxed pace, that can be interesting with some wierd vehicles.

Stuff to do.
I agree we need to get some stuff happening. First we will have our corral at the Mitty. It in the usual place at cross roads after the Suzuki bridge.Great racing and fun. Lotus is sponsoring the autocross which will provide cars for folks to try. There are parade laps and we'll get on as a club.....loosely speaking of course! It's may 27th to 30th. www.themitty.com. If you could email use or post we'll have enough room. we should have 3 or 4 of our new gt-40's there so come on out. If you have a shelby bring it too!
Now if tracks are what you want. Deep South Cobra Club and us have rented Sebring for May 12th and 13th for a Drivers Education event. If you never have ventured on the big track at Sebring it is a...... treat. The pavement transitions are bone jarring but it is awesome to occupy the same pits that Moss, Gurney and all the greats used in the longest running endurance race in this country. We have limited space but for the ACC we will make some room. contact Lisa at lisa@mcmichaelmotorsports.com for more information.
And no you don't have to have a Superformance to go..........I will say it again we are a non-demoninational Cobra supporter.
This coming weekend is the Year One Experience. Hot rods, muscle cars, and more. The circus come to Road Atlanta. The autocross will be open/ Come see Chuck Beck destroy cones!!!! Or see me. Laps on the track and runs at Commerce are all part of the event. Check it out!
Lastly at the end of the summer The Mustang Club of America will host a big event at Barber. I have been asked to give Cobra rides around the track. If this something that you guys would like to do Call me and you will probably get all the laps you want.
So Mike lets get something going. I'm up for anything..........Rob

I'm in for just about anything. I just need ample time to plan for it. Govt work demands you put in a couple weeks notice before letting you off for vacation or comp time exchange.

Yeeee.....Hawwwww!!
She's back and badder than ever! ERA #414 rides again!
Got the car running this past Friday, so he!! yes I'm ready for something that involves loud noises and topless things - or to TC's point a combination of any variety of these things as long as they include my cobra!!!
I have the Mitty on the calendar, and the Year One as well. However, the official calendar approval process by she who must be obeyed means nothing is for sure till it happens ;-)
Rob, at one time you mentioned investigation of a cobra replica class in one of these events. Any chance we'll get to do more than a parade lap at the Mitty some day??
Can't wait!
Scott

New improved #414
Thanks Mike - I've been having withdrawls as i sent the engine week before Christmas so haven't had any drive time till the last few days!
I sent the engine to Keith Craft, and he basically rebuilt it with the following new items:
- Diamond pistons
- Stage II port and polish the heads
- Drilled block for hydraulic roller cam
- Install Comp Cams cam with intake duration of 242 and lift of .645, exhaust 248 and .635 lift (old Isky was 250 duration and .525 lift)
- Smith brothers push rods
- Polished crank, balanced
- Dyno test
Net is 566 HP at 5900 rpm, and 584 torque at 4600 rpm - about a 150 HP increase!
Also got the new TKO 600 road race tranny installed.
Installed a competition style dash with Smith's gauges.
All I'm waiting on now is a new braided steel oil pressure line, and for Nisonger to replace the speedo which had a problem.
Had a near disaster when the nylon line contacted the headers, melted through, and sprayed oil on the hot headers. Had an oil fire on the headers but got it out and after clean-up I have some paint repair to do on the bottom edge of the header opening, and a couple of wires to replace.
Talk about freakin' out - second drive in the car and I'm suddenly enveloped in a huge cloud of smoke. Luckily when I pulled over a trucker saw me and came running with his fire extinguisher (note to self - ALWAYS re-install the fire extinguisher before going on a test drive - duhhhh)
And - I just got the kitchen pass to go to Year One and Mitty!!!!
Now off to do the non-rain dance

Assuming that my shopworn Cobra credentials are still valid, I'm ready for some playtime. Over the Winter the old 'Vette has been working out on the Bowflex, and has packed on an additional 300 or so horsepower (no nitrous oxide involved BTW).
Another thought for an outing: as you guys know, the SAAC convention (6/30 -7/02) is at VIR this year, and some of my old Cobra buds from NJ are going. How about a group ride to that event?

Rob:
Not to question the old professor, but I'm pretty sure that the Mitty is at the end of this month rather than May.

<Question from a Newbie>
Yes I am new to this. Just picked my Cobra up a few weeks ago, and still getting used to her kick. My question is...when you guys do road trips do you drive your Cobra or do you bring it on a trailer?
I ask this because, I couldn't imagine a long distance trip to Helen in my Cobra the whole time.

Depends
It really is a matter of time and distance. After my experience driving to and from Savannah I'd say my limit is probably about 3 hours. I noticed that I was the exception in Savannah at Roebling Road. Most people trailered their cars there, and were probably better off for it. You're clearly victim to the weather and as others have said it's nice to have a place to lock it up at night and carry all the other "stuff" you might need.
That said, you probably bought the car to drive it, so it will be up to you. However, unless it's local events, you're probably at least 2-3 hours from the nearest other venues where Cobra stuff tends to happen.
My problem is I have no place to store a trailer. Tried to talk Rob Ginn into the trailer rental business, but I think he's got his hands full as is

You new guys are a bunch of woosies. In conjunction with a job relocation, I drove CSX3121 from East Greenwich, RI to Chester, SC, stopping only for gas (lots of gas!), pee breaks, and coffee. Oh to be 30 years old again!

You're right! April it is!
Marco, The old part of the professor kicked in! It is April. Joe G of Classic Motorsports fame is making sure we have some laps and plenty of space.
Trailers are tougher....If there is enogh interest in Sebring in May I will check on a hauler to split. Reliable or someone like that. We would need six participants to make feasable. Let me know quick if we want to do that.
Bud ......you up for some hot laps in Florida. Advanced pursuit training or something like that!

Count me in for a car hauler. If parts fall off of my car at the event, could we get a discount for the lower weight on the way back?
