Was in CA visiting my favorite uncle while in high school. He had some friends living out there from OH. Mentioned to them that aI needed to get back home before school started and planned to take the bus. The jumped up and said "road trip": good time as any to go back for a quick visit ome, and wanted to show off their new Bonneville: Put it in the trunk of their 64 Chvey, 409, tail dragging, and headed back to OH-made it in 49 hours! Not sure how the Bonneville faired-they dropped us at home before unloading it!

....same group got "discussing" which was faster in a drag race:the Bonneville or a 500cc single cyliner Velocette 4 stroke dirt bike. After a bit of drinkin' and smokin' (not me!), took the two bikes of the garage and onto the street of a typical LA subdivision and they "ran" them. Neigbor lights went on as the bike were quickly stored back in the garage as the police arrived-going back to OH was not near as much fun as they were having on the left coast..

Bud, your comment about the vintage bikes leaking oil is sooo right! Us owners of vintage Brit bikes like to respond to people who make the observation "Hey, it's leaking oil!" "No it isn't. It's just marking it's territory!"

I always thought it was the standard 'in motion chain oiling' feature.

Yea, you're right. It just sounds cooler to say "No, it's just marking it's territory." Getting mine back from the shop, this week.

Oh man, I'm gettin' shaky reading through the posts. One of the earlier posts was lamenting about the BSA Lightning. Back when I was in high school and had motorcycle magazines all over my room, I remember the BSA add in Cycle World with the blond standing next to a Beezer Lightning in the shipping crate and the tag line stated "120 Out of the Box". Always had a soft spot for the British twins. Triumph Bonneville, BSA Lightning, Royal Enfield, Norton. All hot rides in their day with low 13 sec. ET's. Very quick out of the hole too and soooooo Steve McQueen-like.

Movie: Great Escape. My age: High school. In the lobby of the theater: a Triumph bike like used in the movie on a rotating display: priceless and imprinted for life!

...again, in high school: I had a Harley Hummer: 150 cc 2 cycle and 2.5 horse power max, with the muffler/chamber attached. Add the chrome extention from your mother's vaccum cleaner, destroying back pressure and reducing net horsepower. When i first rode my Triumph 21 (350cc two cylinder 4 stroke) from just getting off the hHummer, I thought I was riding a spaceship!

My bike mechanic was telling me a story about "back in the day", when he got his first 650 Bonneville. The first time he rode it, he told me, he couldn't believe the power. He thought that this was the ultimate! A buddy of his had bought a 750 Commando, but was afraid to ride it home from the dealership. He asked my mechanic if he would ride it home for him. Gus (mechanic) said sure. He got on it and his friend followed him. Gus told me that he found it unbelievable the difference between the two. He thought the Triumph was the ultimate, but after he rode the Norton, there was no comparrison.
When I was in high school, two of my buddies had Nortons. I fell in love with the Norton from that time on. I picked up my Norton about 8 yr. ago. Just love the bike. A Bonneville came up last year and I bought that. There is a huge difference between the two. If I had to make a choice I would take the Norton. It just pulls and doesn't stop. Here are a couple of pics of both.

The new Bonnies are 790cc. I went riding with a friend who has a 1999 HD Road King. He got the jump on me at speed, but I walked up on him once we went Ton Up .. then proceeded to pull right on past him. I'm really loving this Bike. Even thinking about doing a 904cc upgrade to it. MUST GET MORE HP!
