Default Going through steps to change business name....

After much consideration, I have decided to change my business name. "B2" is what's "left over" of a partnership from 6-7 years ago. I had a good friend who was originally co-owner of the business and he left a few years back.

In addition, there are (3) other B2 Motorsports in the US that I have found. One is a used car dealership in Florida. The other two belong to a sprint car team and, coincidentally, a guy who sells drivetrain parts.

I don't want to be associated with any of them.

I have procured two domain names just in case...

(1) Brent Lykins Motorsports

(2) Lykins Motorsports

I'd be interested in hearing anyone's thoughts about which would seem more logical to go with.

I'd also be interested in hearing any advice on how to make the change over from one business to the other, as easily as possible.

I have already contacted the attorney who drew up the articles of organization for B2 Motorsports and he says that they can be amended to change the name. Sounds easy enough.

Seems like the hardest part will be doing the website/email dance and switching over the formalities....bank account, etc, etc.

Thoughts?

Brent,

Changing the web site over can get involved. You should ask CW about this as he is the most qualified person I know of to tell you all the steps you would have to take. If you go to a new domain make sure you don't get an old one that may have been blocked on some search engines for whatever reason. The rest of the papers and such are just going to take a lot of time.

Ron

Regarding your choice of a name for your business: Sadly, there have been enough posts about disreputable businesses ripping off car enthusiasts to make many potential customers suspicious of many businesses. And many of those disreputable businesses hide behind generic names that don't reveal the identities of the people who run them. Putting your entire real name in the business name may ease the suspicion of potential customers who don't already know your solid reputation. For that reason, I prefer "Brent Lykins Motorsports."

Good luck with the change.

Thanks Tommy.

Ron, I've already procured two domain names. It would be easy for me to change the logo on the current page and just move everything over. I haven't thought about how the email would work.....I've got hundreds and hundreds of emails that need to be stored and kept.

My vote is the shorter name:

Lykins Motorsports

Easier to remember, easier to roll off your tongue.

Change over for your email and web site is not difficult at all, CW can do it for you in less than an afternoon if he has access to your server.

I'd hire Ron to do that. Ron, you reading this?

I have a tremendous amount of email on a POP3 webmail interface that I would need to either forward, or more, or do something with.....

When I dumped my optonline.net email account and started using my old hotmail account I had several thousand emails on their server. I went out and downloaded "Seamonkey" (think old style Netscape type browser with an email program imbedded). Configured the mail program, and downloaded everything off the server (I kept them on the server as well) and on to my local system (all emails in all my folders, now saved on my hard drive).

Not difficult to do, and the added benefit is you can mirror your old emails on each computer (I have them on my laptop, and my desktop server at home). Renaming the account later on and changing the email address is as simple as can be.......

Hope you find this helpful as well. Ron might have an even easier way, but this is what worked for me.

Though "Lykins Motorsports" is shorter, I would go with "Brent Lykins Motorsports" and use "BLM" as a moniker or logo. I just think the BLM tag could stick in people's heads better than the drawn out name.

Please don't use "BLM" for anything. To me (in the oil industry) it stands for "Bureau of Land Management" and has a horrible Government association. Kind of like EPA or OSHA.

You don't need to change the corporate details, just do a "DBA" or "Trading As". You would legally be "B2 Motorsports" DBA "Lykins Motorsports" or whatever.

You bank accounts and corporate book can stay as they are and you save time and money. You can advertise as "Lykins Motorsports" and accept checks, etc. under either name.

I talked to an attorney about doing that as well. I guess it would make things easier, just a website/email change.

"LRE". Lykins Racing Engines. Serious as befitting a mechanical engineer.
Like "SSRE" and "KCR", a good brand name and everybody gets that it's street engines too. Your site lists all the parts and driveline services so your covered.

I prefer Lykins Motorsports. Shorter is better, and it sounds good. But at the end of the day, the name won't matter that much anyway.
