Yesterday I had the garage open while I was fixing sprinklers and such and a young man from down the street walked past. Now this young man is probably a freshman in high school.
He was looking at the Cobra and I could see the question coming. He asked the question like I never heard it before. He asked, "Is that a real Shelby Cobra?" I said, "No, it is a replica". Then he said "nice". I just could not believe that this freshman in high school could ask the question perfectly and most adults can’t.

When I was in college in the 60's in California we referred to them as "A.C. Cobra's". Nobody uses that term anymore.

Buzz, awesome, luv it, sorta like : No, this one is custom built and only cost me US$100,000 whereas the original costs US$6 million at todays prices and I cannot afford that. Seems like any reasonable person could grasp that, the operative word being: reasonable. Cheers, tin-man

My response to, Is it real? It's much better than real, this one I feel comfortable driving, can modify it any way I like, and it increases in value.Oh! and I own it!
Mine says 460 on the fender and on the valve covers, never a problem there, other than the FE crowd.Of course that never bothers me anyway, when building the car it only made sense to build the better engine, sure glad I did.Tsk Tsk.
Bottom line is,I spent 2 yrs building this car from the ground up,have no regrets and very proud to drive around and show it off.

Jeez, I just re read this thread after leaving it alone for a few months.
Some of us read waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay to much into the "Is it real" question.
Quit trying to guess the motives of the asker and just tell the truth. Who gives a rats ass if the guy walks away or continues to drool and praise your car.
My car is a replica. Period! I can't afford an original and probably wouldn't drive it if I could. My REPLICA gives me the best bang for the buck. I can experience the fun and performance of the original without having to buy one.
Some of us are way too sensitive.

When I had mine and was asked that question I just told them no it is a replica and not even close to being the same as an Original. I had the wrong roll bar, side pipes, brakes, and wheel base. But I also has everything matched on the dyno and the side pipes I used without the 4 into 1 collectors gained me 13 horsepower. Even when I told them it was just a replica, I would guess that 90% of the comments were very nice. I just figured as different as mine was from an original, if the ones that got nasty about it had to ask they never knew a lot anyway.

The way I look at the FE vs 460 issue is like this. If both the FE and the 385 series engines had been available at that time, which one would have ended up in the car? I'm betting it would have been the 385 series, due to the greater power potental of the engine.
Just think, it may have been the 429 SC Cobra.

Ford would not be promoting two competing engines at the same time. The FE is 1950's technology, and the 335/385 is 1960's technology, although they copied that design from chevy.

Interesting this thread has come alive again now that Cobra driving season is upon us. When asked "Is it real?", I answer "No, it's a replica made by ERA in New Britain, CT." I'm absolutely flattered that someone actually thinks my car is real.

Most people are referring to the canted valve heads when they make this statement.

I always wondered where the term kit car came from.I could see it if when the parts were dropped at the front door you just bolt everything together. Mine was far from that easy.By no means a kit in my eyes.No biggy could not be happier with end result.People can ask or say whatever, bottom line is my name is on the title and registration.

Keith Craft is building the engine for my Superformance right now. When someone asks me if it’s “real”. My response will be….it’s real……….fast.

ok. I only read the first 5 pages ,
I once ask if a 70 yenko nova(um sorry duece) if it was real.
his responce was "nope ...it's unreal!, to that he waved me over and started showing all the little extra things he had done . like tech and shift light mounted in the orginal dash.
really was an awsome car with yenko stripes on it.
I really hope that one someone will ask me that about my cobra....cause that means I got one

Is it real or fake??
I get tired of pulling up to a stoplight and being asked "Is your cobra real or fake"?
