Cold air intake

I was watching the Speed channel the other day and saw them installing a Spectre Cold Air Intake on a car. Has anyone on here installed one on their Cobra? Just curious about the results, if you have.

I see you're not getting much response so here's the solution I made up. I am not familiar with the product you saw.

I fabbed this aluminum pan with Moroso foam 5 years ago and it is a major improvement. Power increase and a stable idle by keeping heat away and breathing outside air.

Chas. Thanks for your reply. Your setup looks great. I saw a Spectre Cold Air Intake on the Speed Channel last week and was wondering if anyone here has used this setup. I was wondering about the hood clearance, horsepower increase etc. Thanks again, Pacco

I've seen the Spectre setup from Summit and although it is a good concept, I'd prefer to have the whole housing made from some composite material as an insulator to not reheat the incoming air.

All the cold air systems I've seen advertised have been for throttle body intakes. I haven't seen any similar to the Spectre introduced for carbs. Chas has one of the nicest ones I've seen in a long time. While it might be possible to make a system like the Spectre's for a carb, the twist and turns plus the ending 90 degree elbow wouldn't seem to have much of a positive effect for a carb in our tight confines. It will interesting to see what FASTERPATRICK ends up with on his, then modify from there for yours. He is a master of problem solving, most often in very unique ways.

You'd need something like this (minus the superchargers...) to adapt to a standard carb.

A single external filter is marginal for a big block, so my ideal carb manifold would have two nipples for hoses. Of course you still have to find room for those external filters, which are quite large.

The link I posted is pretty much for modern fi cars I know. However I think it reads the same for any cold air system. Getting 5 to 10 HP increase seems easy. Chas did a nice job however as I remember in general a good electrical conductor is a good heat conductor. Need something lighter and less heat conductive then aluminum.

Thanks guys. You're right about heat conduction. What you don't see is that the bottom of my pan is covered with adhesive reflective insulation like most guys use on footboxes. Works very well.

It's a sheet, not a plate-.045". You must remember to flange the carb(s) opening 3/8" to clear the float adjusters.

I have a similiar setup with one four barrel and found I needed to eliminate the foam on the front to allow fresh air to the filter/carb.

Yours is very nice and similar to mine. However, removing the foam at the front lets in hot rad air and when you stop, pulls all the underhood heat in.

Solution is to remove the solid filter lid and get K&N Extreme open lid like mine. Then just replace the front foam edge.

Very nice setup,Chas. You mentioned that you got the foam from Moroso. Do you have a link, or how it was refered to? I haven't had any luck looking around their site.

Only if the carb is sealed to the scoop with no underhood air entering.

Is there a foam product that will attach to the top of a turkey pan to seal it to the hood scoop similar to this moroso foam, or will this not make much of a difference?

A TP has holes for linkage and fuel lines-sealing to the scoop won't help much. It also warms the carb baseplate nicely.
