Default 0 to 60/60 to 0

Cobra enthusiast, I heard that the Cobra is one of the fastest production cars from 0 to 60 and back to 0. Is there any truth to this. I realize we can get into HP/TQ, SB/BB, Original/Replica, what do you have to say? I would love to brag a little on this topic if it's so.

They used to brag that the original Cobra could go from 0-100-0 in ten seconds.

But I always thought that could only happen if the car was pushed off a cliff.

Ken Miles was timed doing 0-100-0 in 13.8 seconds. But even though the Cobra was recognized as the fastest-accelerating production car for many, many years, its performance has since been eclipsed by a number of hyperfast cars (Bugatti Veyron, McLaren F1, Ariel Atom...).

Don't recall reading anything about 0-60-0 times for the Cobra.

I doubt an original Cobra could do 0 - 100 - 0 in 10 seconds... maybe 15 seconds though.

This past weekend CSX3170 won the Optima Challenge for 0-60-0 against a fairly tough crowd including a Nissan GT-R, Mercedes AMG Black Series, a LS9 powered Camero and many other fast cars all with good sticky street tires. The event was run on a new asphalt surface (traction Challenged) with no drag radials allowed. Times are not published yet but I believe it was 6.5 seconds. On one run the car reached 69 mph and stopped in a time of 6.9 seconds. We tried to talk them into a 0-100-0 deal but they said there was not enough room.

Wow! Congratulations!!!! It still shows that our little cars had and have some major cajunas and can still play in the modern muscle car sandbox!

I think the original quote was 0 - 100 - 0 in 15 seconds and Ken did it in 13.8. I don't think it was ever 10 seconds.

That's awesome--congratulations.

Is CSX3170 relatively stock? Or has the car been modified to deliver this level of performance?

Mmm, I'd say 'slightly modified'....

I think the original cobra got to 60mph in just a few tics over 4 seconds. With a 4 speed and only 450hp. I wonder what a new 500+ hp SPF or BDR would do it in?

Probably low to mid 3s to 60 mph for a 550 engine HP Backdraft(400 rear wheel HP).

Here are a few cars I tested on colder days for good performance, but I never tried the stop back to 0. The Cobra was actually 2550lbs with me in it and would have been about 500 at the tires on that day I tested it as it was pretty cold air. It's hard to hook two wheels on a cold street though.

Here's a cool test from a magazine. It looks like most sports cars stop from 100 in a bit over 4 seconds.

I'm pretty sure I can make the 0-100-0 in 10 or under. My 60' time is 1.39 which is 58.8 MPH, so 60 should be under 2 seconds. http://golenengineservice.com/calc/calc60mp.htm

At 1/2 track I'm in the 6.1 range @ 112 Mph, so 100 should be in the 5's someplace, that still leaves me a good 4 seconds to stop. Should be close.

You would be in the mid 4s to 100 mph with that 60 ft time at the drag strip. Pretty quick!

As you can see from this chart the Cobra is still in pretty good company. Amazing when you consider how long ago the Cobra did it and how "old" the car's technology (chassis etc.) was even by 1960s' standards.

By the way the magazine in question is "Autocar," the world's oldest automotive periodical (more than 100 yrs in print). I used to get it weekly at my old work and REALLY miss it now that I've changed jobs. Great editorial, and terrific photos and graphics. Terribly expensive to subscribe to it here in Canada tho'...

My Cobra ran consistantly in the 7.40's at 98-100 MPH in the 1/8 mile on a poorly prepped track with a well mannered FE at around 600 HP.
I don't see why most big block Cobras if they can launch decently couldn't do it in the 12second range.

Here is the 1965 Car and Driver road test. It was done near sea level on a 72F day with a 485 HP Cobra.

14.5 seconds 0 - 100 - 0
4.3 seconds 0 - 60, no shift all first gear.
8.8 seconds 0 - 100
price for car $7000
