It looks pretty blank to me!

You'll have to upload it somewhere (like the Gallery) and link to it.

I think I have seen others with the numbers scratched into them, but they looked better than this. Also, what's the big hole in the plate?

Most of the original plates were hand etched, carved, scribed so other then the black rivets which I have never seen it does look original. I have seen a couple of punched plates as well but I think those are suspect.

I thought the originals had no snake picture on them, they were indeed hand etched, the extra hole has inadvertently been drilled through from the inside on that one.

Here is what they looked like. This one is a fake.

I just checked "my records" and the plate in question does appear to be original WITH the snake. The one mentioned above is not correct nor is the incorrect black painted footboxes in the picture as well. Just because it's a pic on CSXINFO.net doesn't make it right. I'll post two pics of the correct plate...

Frank

I beleive a plate with the snake was not from the 60's? Might be a re-plate on an original.

I could be wrong because I am far from a know-it-all but I would bet my house on this one that the pics I posted are the real deal, from original unmolested CSX, 60's made in England and put together in the LAX shop Cobra's.

I didn't doubt that it was a real CSX3XXX car you saw with the tag, just doubted the age of the tag itself. I have seen one original with a retag (snake) before, might need Ron's help on this one. As far as I know the original tag is not duplicated and the one with the snake is a repop.

Help .........

Jeff:

Just looked at two other known unmolested cars I know of and both did NOT have the snake. One is an original owner car. Another one of the pics above is a 2k 2nd owner unmolested car. My guess now is both are correct. Who knows..most of my research and desire is with 3200 series cars. Now that I think of it the two photos are from 3300 series cars and the two cars without the snakes are 3200 cars.

Not to confuse the issue, but what era did the plates that give Shelby American's address as Venice, California, come from? I think I've seen a couple on 289 Cobras.

Best answer here is that everyone is kinda right.

The SAAC World Registry sums it up nicely...

Three different types of serial number plates were used on the 427 cars.

The plate referenced from csxinfo.net (without the snake) is accurate and correct for Comp and S/C cars, as well as some street cars. The s/n was engraved with a hand-engraving tool.

The AC Cars plate, as used on the CSX2000 line, appeared on some mid-numbered cars, including the narrow-hip version (mid-CSX31xx). These had the numbers hand-stamped.

The plate style in the original post of this thread, with the snake logo, was used on most cars over CSX33xx, as well as "updated" and unsold lower serial number cars. This was done at the end of 1966 when the model year flipped. They too were mostly hand-stamped.

Questions?

If I read the tag correctly, it is engraved CSX 3337. But that tag was NOT the tag on 3337 when I owned it, and that tag is a reproduction. The factory tags, when engraved, looked quite different.

Can't get much more accurate than the former owner! Thanks Ned.
