While not a Shelby, it's certainly a real AC Cobra IMO. These cars are quite nice, and not nearly as costly as their Shelby cousins. The attractive aluminum bodywork makes this a great addition to anyones garage, and it would definitely make a great driver. I don't particularly care for the polished spats or the padded dash, and the nose seems a little pronounced, but overall they are a bargain in that price range.

Default Registration on these?

I don't mean to hijack this thread but it seems that most of the important AK players' eyes are already here:

Most of the AK Cobras I've seen have had their engine modified, like no smog equipment. Here in California, we couldn't register this car as a kit, so no SB-100. Do your respective states not require smog equipment? How are guys doing this?

Thanks,
rodneym

Many states cease smog checks or equipment inspection at 20 model years or so. I had a customer with a 1987 Fuel Injected MK IV in Ohio who had removed his convertors and installed a sweet Borla exhaust system, car passed Ohio inspection. In fact they did a sniff test for sh!ts and giggles and the car nearly passed that with no convertors!

PLenkov,
If you have not received all of the info you need, you might try the AC owner's Club forum located at
http://www.acownersclub.co.uk/forum/
They have a section dedicated to the MkIV.

Good to know Mark IV. There used to be a rolling 30 years in CA but that was repealed. Now every car from 76 or newer must comply. That makes bringing a car like this to CA a costly move (install cats, smog pump, computer if applicable, etc), or keep is registered out of state like the RVers.

Does anybody know which model years of these cars had the EFI vs. the carbureted engines? (speaking of course in terms of the U.S. cars)

The original owner of AK1185 was given a choice from the AC factory, and he requested the carb. He also requested, and received, no side marker lights. And, yes, I now have a crate GT40 302 motor installed but kept the original engine. It's a fun car for the price.

You just do what hot rodders have been doing for years. Install the original smog equipment for the inspection/test and then remove it after it passes! Keep the components in the garage for the next bi-annual inspection. The chances of anybody (like the CHP) catching you in between is pretty remote. If the car was legal for registration in the year of its manufacture, it would be legal now as long as it has all of its original smog and safety equipment installed.

The same dealer in Indiana has one for sale about five months ago that had been modified to remove the safety bumpers. The body looked great and aside from the doors was very close to the originals in look.
A dealer in Austin sold these and I drove one in 1985 and loved it, they had five or so in stock and I was a fan of the quality and performance of the cars.
