NEED HELP FROM EXPERTS - RE: AC Cobra MkIV
I have been trying to get more info on a car I am interested in purchasing -- a 1987 Original AC Cobra MkIV.
302. All Aluminum body.
8,400 miles.
MINT CONDITION. Now there seems to be two schools of thought on this car -- some say it's a repro -- others say it's an original "continuation" car and should NOT be lumped in with repro (quality or price wise). I'm baffled by all the opinions, so I figured I'd come to you folks, the experts... any thoughts on this car and what present market value would be?
Truly appreciate hearing from you folks here who know the most...

For curiosity sake what is the CSX number? Do you have pictures of said car? What are the full details & condition. So many factors in determining value of these cars

This would be one of the Autokraft cars I think. Sold under "AC" legally as far as I know.
I don't know much more though.

Price is 65K... and 20% of it is a write off, because the car was part of an auction that proceeds went to charity.

More details are needed before we can offer you an opinion on current value.
As for real or replica, all AC MKIV's are real MKIV's made by AC. VIN will start with an AK and not a CSX.

I am a huge fan of the MKIV however they are sort of the read headed step child of the Cobra group. They were a car built by Brian Angliss in the 80's and 90's. They were sold via Ford Dealers here in the US. They are registered in SAAC registry....
Are they real?
They are real AC however not recognized by most US Vintage race or show as original. For example at Limerock Rolex Festival they are considered replicas of sort.
Are they exact?
Not really, they used updates to improve crash protection and a bit more glass on the underside. Interiors used a bit more artistic liberty.
They were factory built cars and in my opinion top notch ally cars. Just don't pay REAL pricing as they are not a Shelby..... Lightweight cars usually fetch more as they were true to the original. I prefer the carb cars to FI, easier to upgrade.
I have seen cars as low as 40k a few years back to 6 figures in the early 2000 era, typical sale prices range from 50k-65k not much more than they did off the showroom floor at Ford. Collectable factor? Only time will tell, keep in mind it is not a Shelby...
Best of luck!

Between 1982 and 1995, 494 AC MK IV's were produced with various engines ranging from a standard 4V 302, 302EFI, 351, 289, 427, 428 and "unknown" including rollers. These were broken down into models AK, AKL/Series 1, AKL/Series II
The description in the Registry includes, "The AC MKIV is unique in the world of Cobras. It is not an "original" Cobra and it is not a replica. It is not a continuation of production..."
"The AC MKIV is probably best described as a variation of the Cobra"
Model, engine, options and condition will determine market value.

If you can get hold of the May 1986 issue of Automobile Magazine , they have a large write up and test on the Autokraft Mk IV starting on page 30 .... and the car on the cover . I have that issue . According to them , the car sold new for $47,900 and there were two options available ... a functional hood scoop for $700 and the two white racing stripes for $600 .
Engine and transmission on this car was the high-output version of the 5.0 liter Mustang GT engine , transmission was the Borg-Warner T5 five speed and a Salisbury limited slip differential with a 3.06: 1 gear .This particular car was bought from Pawnee Ford Dealership in OK . According to the article , there were 6 dealerships ( then ) authorized to sell the cars and only 100 cars a year were to be built .
In the article , Shelby , when asked about Ford allowing Autokraft to use the Cobra name said ... " If they do , I`ll sue their a$$es " Sorta sounds familiar ??
Maybe Automobile Magazine has an on line archive that you could pull this article up on as it has a ton of info on the car and the company as of 1986 .
Good luck .
Bob

Well, we have had a couple of them in and there are some observations. --
The pedals are different as opposed to a CSX car as they use the ford "Cable" clutch of the period.
The electrics are sourced from various Brit manufacturers of the period, and some can be hard to source.
the steering collumn and assoicated accessories are complete junk.
overall it is a deal of a car, aluminum body work, heritage and history and all that, but you will have some interesting tasks sourcing brake parts, and minor accessories.
at 60-65K for a car in usable shape, not a bad deal on a classic piece of Anglo-American hot rod history.
Be prepared to be a parts detective from time to time and stock up on certain spares when you find them.

MKIV's
Depending on whose b.s. you buy into, these are junk or great cars. Supposedly MKIII's with updates, such as frua rear hubs to give more rear track and improved handling, better insulation;although you can't prove it by me; suspension mods to help with adjustments; depending on AK number, slight variations to body lines that are nearly unnoticable except for door cuts. They appear to be very reliable when driven, no worse than others that aren't and the parts are easier to find than you might think; there is a whole industry in UK devoted to them. Drive like the real thing; because they are;stop easier as the brakes are boosted (my old CSX car was a BEAR to stop). I love mine, but it is not practical here except in shoulder months. The aluminum dents easily, but Dent Doctor fixes easily. Need no real inspection issues as it 23 years old, but would pass emmissions and crash for its year and while not as gut wretching in torque as a 427...it gives me a smile now and then.
