Fuel You Use

I was wondering if many of you have noticed how your Cobra performs with E10 gasoline (90 % Gasoline and 10% Ethanol). In the past year many areas have converted to E10. Can you tell much difference and it worth trying to find a fuel without any ethanol.

They put all sorts of stuff in the gas in Scottsdale, AZ. The worst thing is they only go up to 91 octane. The Roush 427R shouldn't be subjected to that fuel in my opinion. I ran unleaded 100 octane much of the time, but mixed down to 97 or so with pump gas at times.

I have to agree with Greg. I do the same thing. My motor runs a lot better on the good stuff. Especially in Scottsdale and Phoenix. You can really notice the difference.

I have been running Union 76 race gas. 100 Octane. The station near my house has it at the pump. The car seems to like it alot better than the 91 which is the only other premium pump option around here. The $8.50/gal is no fun though.....

In Hawaii we have 92 octane with up to 10% ethanol (who knows?) and for
my 351W I found adding 1 gallon of 110LL Avgas per 10 of the 92 it runs a
lot better - especially in 5th and I have a 3.27 rear with the.64 5th and can
run it in 5th at 55 if it is flat and level. Before, the lowest was 65 and going
over the hill on H-3 required a downshift into 4th - no more, it just cruises
right on up. I can get the Avgas for less than $6/gallon and the mileage
goes up 2 to 3 mpg so it is well worth it.

I agree with that for up here. The highest we can get at the pump is 91 and I would bet if it was tested it would not be that high. It neither looks nor smells like gas and even my 65 Comet with the 289 doesn't run well on it. I believe you could throw it on a fire and it would put the fire out. I buy a barrel of 110 leaded racing gas and mix it. My 69s book says nothing less than 105 octane, but I don't drive it very much.

All our fuel is E10 fortified an inline Fitch fuel catalyst seems to negate it's affects.I just picked up an additive that totally dispurses any water in fuel, not letting it separate to the bottom of the tank.

Back in the late '60s and '70s when I was racing, at the end of the day we would throw the oily tools in the oil drain pan, give it a swish or two, and the tools and drain pan were clean to go back in the trailer. If you try that now, it leaves your hands white (dried out) and stinking. Now you can't even stand the smell.

About every third fill-up (at half tank intervals), I blend 5 gallons of Sunoco 110 with the 91 octane water that Chevron sells. I stick with Chevron because their blend is at least more consistent than other options I have tried. $6.58/gal for the 110, at a pump. The car does run a little tighter on the blend, and a side benefit is that the scent from the pipes makes my garage smell GREAT.

E10 gasoline will consume water until it is totally saturated. The next drop of water (or condensation in the tank) will cause a phase separation where most of the water will drop down to the bottom of the tank. The ethanol will split between the gas and the water, but most of the ethanol will be in the water phase leaving about 4% of the ethanol in the gasoline phase. No engine will run on the water and the 4% ethanol gasoline probably has 85 octane. I don't know how a Fitch fuel catalyst could counter thermodynamics.

If you mix regular and hightest you get a higher octane rating than 91 plus add some octane booster and you should be fine a plug read will tell you a lot about your engine performance.

You said if you mix regular (87 octane) and high test (91 octane?) you will get a higher octane? Maybe if there is lead in the high test, but if you are just mixing retail gasoline, the resulting octane will be pretty close to a proportional blend of octane. A 50/50 blend of 87 and 91 makes 89 octane. That's the blend to make the retail midgrade gasoline. I agree when you add the octane booster you will get a higher octane.

Sunoco Standard (purple) - 20% to Sunoco Ultra - 80%. Runs great on all our older vehicles. Compression ratio up to 11.0.
