The Unique looks like it's been driven & needs some clean up. That may just mean only that. Maybe it means more? Tough to tell w/o a hands on inspection.
I put together a spreadsheet when I was looking into my car. Put a checklist together of every little thing it takes to build a car & compare that to what is Used on the market. If you assume the motor will need a complete rebuild in a year or two, add that to the price of the car & so on. If the car is solid, less the motor sometimes a little elbow grease & a new motor can be cheaper than building a new car. It just really all depends on what you have at hand & what you would build.
I can tell you this...I started with a Number of what it would cost to build. Had I stuck with that plan I would have come fairly close. However, two things happen. #1. once you have a car in the process or even in your driveway you start thinking about upgrades/options. #2 Most people forget a lot of little things that add up quick on the list. Fuel line/regulator/pump. Battery/cabling/voltage reg/misc elect parts. Any extra labor & So on & so forth.
Most of this you probably already know & considering resale value, I would assume this is why you are looking at a used car. It really makes sense right now to buy used if you find something in decent shape. All are things to consider. & A little elbow grease can lighten the pocket book considerably.
