Quality-wise, which GT40 you prefer: CAV or SPF?

The shape of the SPF wins hands down for me. The SAAC registry part isn't that important for me. However, the CAV is a very nice car too. |

In terms of looks, I like the SPF GT40 MKII best. If I was in the market for a GT40, I'd personally lean towards a CAV or a BDR, simply because they both have a little more room in the passenger compartment.

Without question, Superformance. The cars are much more authentic, and I feel that is the point of making any replica.

Someone once told me that repairing damage on a monocoque frame is much more difficult than repairing a tubular frame. I know the superformance is monocoque, but what about the CAV, backdraft, ERA ? Wasn't there one GT40 that had a tubular frame ?

Keeping this thread on track, if you're talking about quality I would guess that they are about the same, although in reading about the SPF's on the gt-40 forum it appears that SPF's seem to have quite a few design and reliability issues.
As far as the shape, I am hard pressed to see much wrong with the CAV - then again I may be biased. lol

If I wanted to buy a complete car and have it NOW, I'd probably go with SPF.
If I wanted to buy a complete car and were willing to wait a while, I'd probably go with ERA.
If I wanted to BUILD a car from a kit, I'd probably go with the CAV.
But I'd probably end up with a Ford GT.

The SPF has a steel roof, the CAV has a stainless steel monocoque chasis and is also sealed better from a water-entry perspective. Most of the differences are hashed out over at www.gt40s.com.
Pat, just my opinion, but I like the shape of the SPF better; however, I would not be adverse to owning a CAV at all. It just would be my 2nd choice between the two offerings. |

As for the question at hand, I do think that SPF had issues with the first few cars built (CAV may have too, it was a LONG time ago), but I think that those have largely been addressed. While mine isn't on the road yet, I found the general fit and finish to be very good. Lightyears ahead of the originals. The CAVs I've seen looked great too, and I really think it comes down to how original you want it to be. None of the originals were built (or designed) to production car standards (they're hot, loud, leak like crazy, and not particullarly roomy, and the body panel fit was questionable). That said, I don't think you can go wrong with either, it just comes down to personal preference.

Ron, I just figured out that you bought the Gulf livery car from Dennis Peck (Dynamic West) in Redwood City. Is that correct? Beautiful car, if that's the case. I thought about it, just a little bit.
Pat, my eye sees slight difference in the front and the rear. The CAV's rear droops a little lower in the back and I believe others might agree with me. Here's a thread from www.gt40s.com:

What? A comparison of what guys who own each car have to say about their cars? LOL
I would be more interested in some side by side pictures of each car so that these "differences" can be seen....heavens knows, I can't see much difference.

I have tried to sit in a SPF more than once, just can not fit comfortably. They seem to like people that are 5 foot 9 inches and too bad if you are taller.
I was able to sit in a CAV. It seemed fine, but I did not have a brain bucket on at the time.
I asked SPF if they had any plans to accomodate a 6 foot plus tall person and they said "other than a Gurney bubble, no."
No SPFs for me, I'd take the CAV.
Just my experience with this.
