Hmmm. Cobra replica owners attempting to pass off their replicas as originals with license plates from the 1960's.

I heard great things about this web stie as well for plates. I will be getting mine here.

You probably won't ever run into a problem, unless some police office decides it is a problem.
But, it's not legal...just the way it is.

Doug ...
Another Speedster story ... a few years ago, I toured a high end shop and there were (2) 'original' Speedsters and both had black & yellow plates, but something did not look quite right. The original 60's California black & yellow plates have ABC 123 configuration, which was the kind of plate, one of these cars had.
In the 70's CA went to the blue & yellow 123 ABC plates, and that is exactly what the other car had, except that it had been repainted black & yellow ... a more and more common practice these days.

Oh come on. The idea that replica owners are looking for as many original details as possible just so they can pass off their Kobras as the real thing is ridiculous. They do it strictly for their appreciation of history, right?

I don't think I was trying to pass off anything for something it wasn't with a black plate. I applied and got the plate with my CSX 4990 number and had a black plate made to match. I thought that way anyone that wondered if it was real could clearly see it was not a Cobra from the 60's.
I thought that was as straight up and honest as I could be.
The CHP also said, if I angered an officer enough, technically the black plate could be a problem.

I thought if its registered as a 1965 , you just order black plates ? or is it just a Cali thing , you don't register it as a 1965 like some states .
SDR
Wait are black plates the same as collector plates ? or is only way to have them is that they came with the car ? meaning the DMV doesn't make them anyMore .

Aw, don't let them get you riled up. They just want to turn this into another "My Car is Real" thread.

Its a Cali thing. Our cars have to be registered as a, in my case, 2008 SPNS car. Not a 1965 car.
I sensed that replica tone beginning to raise its ugly head again and I wanted to put it to rest so we do not destroy another very informative thread. We all have different Cobras and we really need to put that whole issue to rest.
Given the advice of the CHP, if you want a black plate, its fine as long as all the numbers and letters match and the stickers are current. But, if CHP is looking at your black plate through a cloud of smoke, you got problems. The track is the best place for that stuff. Or the Ultimate Street Car challenge.......

California Black Plates
I ordered some plates for my car in the original 66 license plate # (I lost the originals years ago when I took the car off the street) from this guy ( http://www.cr8apl8.com/) and the Ca DMV people asked me what I was trying to pull. The plates have to be original California plates not reproductions in order to be assigned to a particular car of that model year. I ended up getting Historical plates which limits me to special events only.
DMV told me that if I bought real plates at a swap meet and they were clear on their books I could register them to my vehicle. I was also told that I needed both plates for them to inspect. I guess I am a dummy for not reading the fine print on the cr8ap8 web site because when I emailed the guy asking why he was selling stuff that couldn't be used, he called be a ##$###$ in several new and creative ways. I told him that it was a not very smart to treat a customer that way and he told me he had tons of orders and didn't need my or any of my friends business. Bottom line, you can use cheap vacuum formed replicas at car shows but I wouldn't take a chance with them on the street. I understand that if the officer wants to, he can impound your car if the plates are not real.

thanks cobra25 . good info Cobra#3170 , if i had an original I guess historical plates would definitely be a sad second to black plates . I would definitely find some clear title ones at a swap meet .

My apologies. What I meant to write was Beck Speedster or Spyder, not Cobra replica.
