Default California Black Plates

After seeing a SPF Daytona on Fleabay that had California Black Plates on it I'm wondering if anyone else here has been able to accomplish this task with their replica. I thought that they were only applicable to year of manufacture, not year model... am I wrong? Sure would be cool to have a set.

You can purchase them at swap meets and such but you can't use them on your car - they are really only good for display purposes.

Plate makers will take your license plate numbers and make a new plate in black, some guys get away with it since the plate matches the registration.

Here's a long thread on California Black Plates from the SAAC Forum, but it does NOT pertain to SPCNS vehicles. Just an FYI.

These guys will turn out anything you like: http://www.licenseplates.tv/

I find it amusing that their poster car (this week) appears to be a red Barchetta...

I was thinking about a black and yellow reading ERA 707, for shows... Not sure I'd have the balz to run a bogus plate on the street, though. For one thing, there never were custom black and yellows and current numbers don't match the three letter, three digit pattern from then.

I have the original black and yellows for my Mustang and all I'll say is that they're in real, real, real good condition.

Wow, that's cool, thanks for the link. I wonder if you can search plates through the DMV and have them stamped if they come up clear. SIN 666 would be awesome for a rat rod.

I have ERA 2088 black plates for my car. They look awsome, I think. In socal, I've never had a problem. I saw a daily driver ricer a couple weeks ago that had white & black plates. As someone suggested, you might be able to get away with it if you carry the original plates of the same number in your car. Never got a definite on that...but like I said, never had a problem here. nor have I heard of anyone having a problem here.

Be careful when using black plates on a car not legally allowed to use them. If you get pulled over by a police officer and he's in a really bad mood, he can have your car impounded.

I had a friend that had the letters on his California plates painted red to match the car. He was stopped and the plates were confiscated after a ticket was issued. If you went with original looking black plates on a cobra replica you might be able to get away with it, but it is still not legal.

So do you plan to just put the back plate on for shows and leave the front plate as is?

Cool. That'll turn a few heads.

I had a Speedster replica in the 90's that had vintage black/yellow plates (not legal by today's standards in CA). It was fun to overhear people telling their friends "wow, it's an original Speedster."

When I had to do the CHP inspection for SB-100 all three cops I talked to said no problem they didn't care if it was a black plate. But, it has to have the correct numbers and letters and the right stickers.

Perfect! I wouldn't think they would have a reason to cause a fuss About it as long as the info was correct on the plate. Of course, if you pissthem off to begin with that may just be enough to find something to give you some trouble about

I was just thinking about doing this, adding the black plates with yellow lettering. I mean, if the lettering is the same, why would the police bother?

I heard great things about this web stie as well for plates. I will be getting mine here.
