IRS question - would this work?
I saw a 1982 jag xj6 for dirt cheap and had a thought. My sons want me to buy it so they can take it apart, but I know it has an IRS. Can this be used on a cobra kit? If so, they could sell some parts and put the money towards our cobra project.
So will this IRS unit work for a cobra? Any help or thoughts would be appreciated.
Pete

The major components can be used but you'll find the XJ6 rears are too wide for a Cobra. The axles and lower arms can be shortened but that needs to be done professionally and can be costly.

Yes the pumpkin is the same casting the 4HU. The other problem with the XJ6 rear is the open rear end and the tall ratio probably 2.88. A 5 speed would be really the deal in front of it. Track is about 52 on the XKE.

Wow, that is quite a difference. Maybe I should just stick with buying the one that comes with the kit.
Thanks so much for the input!

Hi Pete, When I built my cobra I got a complete XJ6 rear end. It was a 3.31 ratio. You can tell ratio by looking at the metal tags that are attached to the diff cover. I sent my control arms to Ron Butler, Cobra builder, now Retired, and he shortened them for me. See my IRS photo in my Album.
I spoke to Ron today and he will shorten both the control arms to the XKE specifications for $200 + shipping. He also has the correct half-shafts for sale at $250.00 for the l & R pair. Seems like a fair price to me.
Ron is a gentleman to deal with and his work has always exceeded my expectations. He is in California, call him he said he would be happy to take care of you. 805-649-6000 He was one of Carroll Shelby's crew in the hay-day of Cobra racing. Please tell him that Arthur Mitchell referred you.

Hi Arthur,
Thank you so much for the tip. I will certainly give Ron a call and see if we can make it work!

If you buy a kit from E.R.A. they will shorten the arms and shafts to the correct size for free.

Actually, ERA will do this if you buy their mounting frame for the XKE/XJ6-based inboard-brake rear drive and suspension. (XKE Series I and II control arms and halfshafts do not need to be shortened, but the later series do.)
I thought it was a good deal, and I'd do it again.
