418w rear seal, what do I have here? See Photo
On my way to putting in a clutch kit on a new to me Backdraft, I want to seal up a very tiny oil leak at the rear pan or main seal, one drop a day, but it's aggravating. I still don't know which one is at fault, pan or seal. It only has 2,000 miles on it, but it looks like someone tried to seal it up before me, or it was assembled that way.
But, it looks like my 418w is a two piece seal. I'm new to Fords, but not to race motors, so I can probably handle it if I know what's in front of me.
Is there any quicksand I'm about to get into here replacing the seal and oil pan gasket? The block number is D9AE-6015-ED17.
What a great source this board is! I guess everyone knows that by now.
Thanks,
Wayne in Gilroy, CA (where it's raining once again and forever)

leak
Hi,
Looks like 2 piece seal, that's hard to do. Unless you have alot of oil a main seal probably is not the problem.
I would look at the rear of the intake manifold and valve covers.
You could put a new gasket on the oil pan but use a little bit of gasket sealer on all the surfaces, even the rubber end seals.
Perry.

Any leak on a SBF shows up on the front of the block plate. Doesn't matter where it's leaking, that's where you'll see it. Take a close look at the front cover and fuel pump boss.

I just went thru this too. Depending on the year of your block, you could have a 2 piece or a 1 piece seal on a Windsor block. The two piece seal is located under the last rear main on the crank. A one piece is is accessable from the rear of the engine. Many engine shops machine the older 2 piece seal blocks to accept the 1 piece seal. All that silicone I see in your photos is there to seal the back of the pan I think. a very common place for leaks. Looks like you have the 2 piece to me...

The place yours could be leaking is between the mating surfaces of the cap and block--there is about a 1/2 inch area that is steal to steel--another area is sometimes the bolt holes for the flywheel will go thru and also it appears that yours has some extra holes drilled possibly for balance that could go thru also

That's just your oil pan gasket. Somebody just didn't put in in too well and smeared a bunch of silicone on the outside to hopefully stop the oil leak, (it never works). You'll just need to install a new pan gasket and don't forget to put sealer in the corners.

Check the intake at the rear valley. Notorious for leaking and will end up dripping off the pan & block plate.

Use a 1 piece gasket from Fel Pro.

Had the same problem a while back. Turned out to be the oil pan gasket on the after market oil pan. Pulled the pan, put on a new gasket with lots of silicon sealer (problem was the pan didn't really fit around the back very well) and reinstalled everything. This time it sealed up just fine and hasn't leaked since. Removing the rear seal from underneath the car without a lift is an invitation to an oil leak.
