SB Crankshaft Plug Problem? See Pic.
It looks like the input shaft of my TKO 600 is touching the back of the pilot bearing bore on a 418w. I'm in the process of changing out the pilot bearing and the picture shows that, but look at the marks on back of the hole, which are circular and it is indented or "rounded" toward the front of the motor. I'm not familiar with the Ford sb yet, but I'm getting there. Is this a plug as I can see the the edges where it looks like it has been driven in the crank. What's the fix here if it's a problem?

Page 6 shows the exploded picture of what needs to come out.
Drain the trans and get it "nose-high" on a bench. Remove the 4 bolts holding the bearing retainer onto the front of the trans. Slowly remove the input shaft being careful not to drop any of the rollers into the case (shown in diagram). Take the shaft to a machine shop and have them mill off however much you think it needs (mine needed 1/8".) They can also bevel the end for you. You'll need a tube of Permatex Anaerobic sealant (local auto part's store) to seal the retainer back on the case.
One banana job.

How steady are you with a 4" disc grinder? Cut a piece of thin wall tube that slides over the spigot brg area of the input shaft to the correct length so that the unwanted piece [ 1/8"--3/16" ] of spigot shaft is exposed, Tape in place & using the tube end as a guide with a 1mm cutoff disc installed on your disc grinder slice off the unwanted portion, then very carefully bevel the first 1/16" @ 45° with a flap disc wheel on the same grinder.. job done ... half a banana
The 'plug' you see in the back of crank is actually the spigot bearing carrier, dont know about you guys in USA, but here in NZ the needle roller bearing & 'that' carrier are sold as one pre-assembled unit , ready to install.... make sure that your TKO is also not fouling on the spigot brg/needle roller on the shoulder where its dia increases to spline dia.
Have you run the motor with the TKO 600 in this condition where the input shaft interferes with crank, if so quite likely that the crank thrust bearing may have damage, center #3 main brg.

This has happened before. The fixes range from a little lathe work on the input shaft to something as simple as seating the pilot deeper if it is not bottomed or adding a chamfer to clear. How much interference are you experiencing?

Thanks for the reply guys. I thought I read here somewhere that the Ford crank was drilled through the end and a plug was pressed into the end of the crank. Must have been greatly mistaken. It's extremely light contact, it that's what it is at all and there is no sign of wear or grooving on the trans input shaft. I'm going to take about 0.125 off if it and call it a day.
Now, if I can just decide to leave that two piece rear seal alone. It's either it or the pan that was leaving that drop on the floor once in a while.

Unless you've wiped the main cap off, it doesn't look like it's leaking at the seal area.
