I'm sure we have some Shelby mustang fan 's here . So here is my rant , I keep reading stuff like " the 67' is the most highley coveted of all shelby mustangs " I ve even seen doctoreed price timelines that have them as more $ than a 68' in the ninety's . Ecuse me ? the 67 has always been the red headed step child , I have the old price guiodes and mag articles to prove it . That damn movie hasv all these posers thinking and paying for 67 like its the $#!+ . I was at a mustang show about a year after the movie and this kid with a 68 says "its like the one in the movie" , I say " Ya but its better cause its a 68 " thinking what a douche . The king is a 68' KR... always has been . There I feel better , please comment .

I would say that the '65 GT350 IS the most coveted. I personally liked( and still do) the '67 over the '68, not sure where the redheaded stepchild analogy comes from. Screw the price guides. The '68 always seemed too chintzy to me, appointment and design wise. The only advantage that the later '68s had was they had CJ engines. Other than that the '67 wins hands down for me.
The high dollar amounts in the last few years, I think that has lessened since the Eleanor builder got in trouble, were for basicly titled cars to make Eleanor clones from. Because the years are so similar, I'd have to guess that the '68s were selling for more than they were worth too. That is just the Mustangs, I don't think the Shelby prices were affected that much by the movie...but the demand for "Eleanors" was piqued. That seems to have waned from what I see.
For me the pecking order would have to start at the '65 and then go down from there, for me the '68,'69 and '70( really a rebadged leftover '69) are at the bottom.

I would agree that the 65 and early 66 are the most desirable. The 67 was the last one actually produced by Shelby, the 68s and later were produced by AO Smith (I think, ) at Shelby's direction. 67 was also the last year for the HiPo 289 as well, the 302 for 68 was pale in comparison, the only 68s that got CJs were the GT500KRs all the others were base 428s like 67.

So are they neat cars in their own right? Yes they are. Are they the most coveted? Not even.

BTW, my admittedly narrow view of the Eleanors is CRAP!!!! In fact, I think it's crap ripped off from a movie stylist by Shelby and given a blessing so that all of the bleating sheep could find another way to stuff Shelby's pockets!

That's all I have to say about that.

They are both great cars and the '67 and '68 GT500s are my favorites of the Shelbys, followed by the '65 & '66 GT350s. '68 is the last good looking Shelby IMHO (excluding 2007-2009). Not a fan of '69+.

The one thing that is FAR uglier on the '68s is the steering wheel. It's a little thing, but the '67 is just so much more attractive. I'd have a hard time looking at that every time I drove it, but I'd get over it if it was a KR with a CJ.

I'm with WDZ and Steve ...

To me it's all about the motor and that's the K code 271 HP 289 Hi-Po ... after that I am not as interested.

My personal preference for the GT 350s is first the '65, then the '67 closely followed by the '66 ... an out of order sequence I know, but there it is ...

The "Perception is Reality" rule applies somewhat here in that 98% of folks that like to watch the movies, particularly this one, couldn't tell a '65 from a '68 from a ...., you get the idea. All they "know" is that there is a 'Stang out there like the one in the movies. That fills alot of pockets down the food chain....

I agree. The 65 Shelby's are basically a race car and are very unique and functional. The early 66's carried over some 65 characteristics for the first cars and then were "civilized" more and more during the remainder of the year. I personally like the 67's over the 68's also. I knew someone in school with a 67 GT500 and I loved the dual 4bbl Police Interceptor Engine in it. Also, my wife has a high school and college girl friend who still owns a 67 GT350 (been in a barn for 30 years) that she still owns. I always liked the 67 grill and the cars produced with the auxillary lights in the center of the grill. The 68, when it received the 428 CJ was no doubt quicker, but the hood and grill never appealed to me as much. But that's a matter of personnal preference. I would certainly take a 68.

I agree with Got The Bug. You've clearly been drinking.

First, I've never read any source that has said the '67 Shelby is the most coveted of all Shelby Mustangs.

Second, the '67 is the red headed step child?

Third, the '68 KR is the king? Certainly, you can have your own opinion, but that would NOT be the prevailing market opinion.

We had a 1968 GT 500 stick, in the '80's. Couldn't really afford to keep her.

I still like the 67 styling cues over the 68

The 68 steering wheel and wood grain interior were not as appealing, to me.
The 67 door panels are nicer, and I like the head-light treatment better.



Aside from the side clearance lights, most everything was the same
except the 68 had the (nicer) sequential turn signals

Engine wise, the 67 came with 2/4's on the FE, the 68 came with 1/4bbl on the PI engine and also on the KR

The 2/4's had the cooler looking air filter assembly

Asking someone which car is better, is like asking someone which kind of beer is better.

Making a long story short, the gentleman which we sold the car to, many years ago, did an amazing job bringing the car back to original condition

The '68 GT R code with the 428 was a pretty hot car too. Then of course it's hard to ignore the Boss 429. I wouldn't mind having either of those.

Several have mentioned Bosses and you only have to go as far as my gallery to see what I prefer there. With the exception of the 65/66 Shelbys the Bosses were much cleaner and more focused IMHO. Tom also mentioned the R models, verts and T/A cars and to me I couldn't care less about the verts but could get a serious stiffy over the R codes or the T/A cars (especially the 69 Boss T/A Shelbys)!

I read in Colin Comer's Shelby book that the first 200 1967 GT350's had that cool red running light in the top vent. Guess they had to discontinue that, because it violated laws in some states.
