Default Dash Question?

I am in the process of removing the dash/gauges so I can apply dash vinyl. Question? I have a mechanical oil gauge. Do I just disconnect the oil line to the back of the gauge? or Do I have to drain the oil from the motor first before doing removing the line to the gauge? Thanks!

Dave,
I disconnected mine, doubled the end of the line over and placed it in a sandwich bag. Then secured it with zip-ties. It didn't leak.

Turn the engine off first.

Thanks Steve, At least I got an honest answer. I was going to call you but didn't want to call you to late. I have a couple of gauges left to come out. I just didn't want oil flowing when I disconnnected the line at the gauge. Thanks, I'll give you a call on tues afternoon.

Carefull, there is usually a little copper washer on the mechanical pressure gauge pressure line from the engine that is easily lost and will cause big problems if not installed. Oil will leak from the tubing on your leg and oil will get into the pressure gauge... I refer to Smiths gauges here...

I had a mechanical oil pressure gauge on my 1966 Chevelle. As long as there wasn't any pressure in the system, it never leaked on me when disconnecting the gauge. Still put a plastic bag over the end with a rubber band just in case.
