Decided on a new BDR-looking for engine advice
Just looking for opinions on an engine to put in this car.
The car will not be raced but driven mostly to shows.
No FI.
Engine cost to be under $10,000.
Looking at 347. Maybe 392.
427 would ne nice but price may be too high.
The new Ford Racing 427 looks nice but seems that it is not ready for shipping yet.
Any opinions on drivability, originality, resale (not a high priority), weight, maintenance, or anything else is greatly appreciated.
Links to engine builders would really help.
Thanks

I'd wait for the Ford 427 Crate Engine as it should be available shortly........

If you are buying for performance, and on a budget I would look very hard at a small block 408W (A lot of bang for the buck). Call Adam at Precision Engines (family owned business). They build a excellent engine and their customer service is second to none. http://www.precisionraceengines.com
Whom ever you choose as an engine builder, make sure that when you have a question, or problem you can pick up the phone on any given day, and speak to the man in charge.

Great to hear you decided on a BDR. On the engine budget is that $10k for just the engine or $10k for the engine package with the transmission, installation, etc?
That's the question.
I do like the 342/347 type engines in these cars though.

By reading the intended use of the car, just put a stock 302 in it and use your money to dress it up.

Dino,
I love that engine too, but it just does not float the boats of most guys... they want some real valve covers and a carb when you pop the hood.
I've gotta figure out what to do for a demonstrator now. I'd like to go the 3V route, but everyone wants to see and hear a 427R....

Mine comes almost ready to run and can come with the Tremec TKO 3550 transmission, bell housing & clutch for under 10k.
Should be everything but the thermostat housing and the MSD.

That is a retail price of under $10,000 for the engine.

Ford crate 392 Z head. 500+hp, $7700, factory reliability. You'll get low 11's at the strip and a compression ratio you can live with in traffic.

Right on Russ, that is what I was going to suggest, a good 390. It's an FE, which sets you apart from the run of the mill bunch right away. Heck you can't tell from looking at it if it's a 390, 427 or 428.
Another great option, could be even better, is Funfer's 428, "almost complete" with all the running gear, thats gonna be hard to beat.

Thanks for bringing this thread back to life.
The cobra scene is all new for me and I like all the info I can get.
About 6 weeks ago I ordered a 408 stroker to make 500 hp.
The engine is close to being finished but the car is about 3 weeks late getting into the states.
I'm hoping to pick up the car mid-June for the show in London, Ohio.

No brainer!!!! The statement below answers your question looking for a $10K motor if you must stick Ford, if not go with the new LS3 fuel injected corvette engine package, Everything including wiring harness to cat converters $8500

I just wantd to let you know that we can do about anything you want. We do a lot of engines for Backdraft Cobras. Our 408 seems to be the engine of choice by most of the Backdraft guys. We can help you with transmission and all if needed. Just let us know if we can help.
Thanks, Keith Craft
