Cobra in Manhattan
My job just had me move to a tiny little island called Manhattan...needless to say, no garage for me. But I'm thinking I can't be the only guy in this town that lives in an apartment and needs a place to safely store and work on his Cobra!
Anybody have any suggestions?
Right now I'm storing it in a self-storage place in NJ but that's not a long-term solution.
Thanks,
Clueless in Manhattan

Go see the guys at the Classic Car Club.
They have a storage area you can rent and work on, I believe.

Thundering through the man-made canyons of downtown NYC in an open top Cobra. The acoustics would be awesome! Now THAT'S what I'd love to do at least once. Except, how do you avoid the windshield washers at the stop lights?

Thanks, Cashburn - I called the guys at www.classiccarclub.com and they do not offer storage to people like me (you can, however, enter your Cobra into their fleet of cars - then every member gets to drive it and you get to drive the other cars...scary thought and not what I was after).
Any other ideas? Or maybe a rich uncle in the Hamptons with an empty bay in his 10 car garage?

I planned to garage mine in the summer months (the garages empty out a bit in summer, so there should be space available at the good ones nearby) and store it at a friend's in Bronxville during the off-season (his Suburban won't fit in his garage, so he has a spare space, next to the Maserati Quottroporte!).

I moved out of NYC because it sucks for owning cars and motorcycles. It will cost more to garage it than to own it. Great restaurants though
BTW
They all get busted at the end of the video by the nypd. What a bummer!

I hate driving in Manhattan; even when it's not my car. If I were in your shoes I would garage the car outside of the city and then drive to it, run it in the country sides, and never bring it back in to Manhattan.

Anyone live in CNY South of Syracuse? I'm going on a job interview in Hamilton next week. What's the area like, cost of living, weather, driving? I'm from Chicago.

Nocupholder
Try this place- Autosport Designs 631-425-1555, www.autosportdesigns.com in Huntington Long Island, I know they store cars and are about 35 miles outside the city, but a ride on the Long Island Railroad to Huntington and then a short cab to them.
I used to bring my Morgan to them for service and would go downstairs to see all the exotics being stored for individuals., they have an incredible place with a lot of exotics for sale and they have a heated security “basement” where they store cars. I don’t know what they charge or what access you have to get your car when you want to stretch her out.
I also think that they would know of other places to store cars.
Another option would be to rent a garage in Queens at a private house, Queens is a short subway ride and you would have access 24/7 to your Cobra.
The North Shore of Long Island offers a lot of twisty roads and fun.
I also know of another place on the North Shore of Long Island were a buddy has stored his cars - will get back to you with that one when I reach him.
The city garages are no place for a Cobra, or the streets for that matter.

Hey Mr. NoCupHolder,
Rick here. I live in New Rochelle, NY in Westchester County, about 15 miles north of Manhattan. You might also consider the SnakePit in Freeport, NY. They are a Superformance dealer and I have been there. The owner is Bill Ostrower and I believe he also can/will store cars. Dunno what he might charge or other details. You can locate his contact info. on the Superformance website. Freeport, NY is a bit closer to Manhattan than Hicksville. Alternatively, there must be places in Westchester County, NY where there are a lot of great parkways to drive your car. Maybe just "google" car storage in Westchester County, NY or something to get a list of possibilities.
Good luck.
Rick
P.S. Driving the Cobra on the cratered roads of Manhattan would definitely put a hurt on your car. I would avoid it unless you were going to the annual Columbus Circle get-together.

Actually, the roads are mostly fine in Manhattan, it's the traffic you'll hate. Also, 15" wheels are smaller than most passenger cars, so you'll have more tire to absorb the potholes that exist.
I live very close to the FDR, so if you come and go at the right time of day, no real issues. Just garage it near the FDR or West Side highway.

Glen,
I'm over in Hamilton County in the town of Herkimer about one hour east of Hamilton which is in Madison County. My wife was there years ago and remembers that the area is very quaint.
The cost of living I have no idea but shouldn't be as bad as the bigger citys. The weather is great in the spring, summer and fall but winter can be pretty harsh at times.
The driving can sweet depending upon where you are located. I would say country roads with hardly any traffic with great views of rolling hills and farms.
Good luck with your interview.

Glen,
I'm in Rochester, about an hour west of Syracuse but have been in that area many times. The weather and cost of living you will probably like better than Chicago. I believe there is a Cobra club or Shelby club in Syracuse. You can go to the Watkins Glen event every summer for vintage cars. Huge Nationals car show in Syracuse every year also.

HaHa...........Cost of living in Chicago, is that what they call it. More like barely living at a big cost.
Watkins Glen......how far would that be from Hamilton.
Wow, that's a nice track. Have you ever been on it?
We have Autobahn C.C. here, outside Chicago in Joliet. Very nice private road course/ country club.
I guess I can see if Enterprise has a real Hot Rod I can rent to go from Syracuse to Hamilton and back to check out the back roads.
