Default 100 sb100 numbers left

As reported on another Cobra Forum, and verified by DMV, there are still about 100 SB100 numbers remaining to be claimed for 2010.

Go get em!

I'm not the least surprised by this. 2-3 years ago a lot of people were attacking their home equity to get into various toys. Now you see a lot of those toys being sold at fire sale prices (just look at the latest BJ auction). It will be interesting to see what "the new normal" will look like, as resale values are definitely down and I predict they will stay at those levels for some time.

But this is really positive news for the CA buyer.

If you are fortunate enough to snag one of those SB100 numbers, please post your result here on CC.

I know the guy that went up to Sacramento to discuss AB1740 (bill to eliminate the cap or increase number of SB100 certs) with the Transportation Committee. There is some speculation that the State has been holding back between 50 and 100 SB100 numbers as a way of making the case that "hey, why should we change the law when the demand is not exceeding the SB100 certs available."

BTW- Jeffries bill (AB1740) was amended to increase the number of SB100 certificates from 500 to 750 and Transportation Committee is supposed to vote on it today.

Just another casualty of our poor economy. Not surprising at all.

The reduction from unlimited SB100 exemptions to a limit of 750 per year is also not surprising.

I figured I'd be up against the wall when I went to register my CCX but had no problems what so ever as this car had been registered before in Ca.

I guess you should only be concerned if you're importing from another state or going with a fresh build?

Amazing. On Jan 3 everyone thought they were all gone. Is there just no communication in the DMV offices, or did 100 or so people abandon their applications?

How would that make sense? The first question I would ask is how many did you issue in 2010?

They used to indicate that all 500 had been issued on their web site. Now, most offices just use the pat answer "all SB100 certs have been issued." If you ask them how many had been issued, my guess is that they'll just say 500.

The only person that I would depend on for straight answer would be Jody at the Santa Clara DMV.

I guess the bigger question is, if there are indeed 100 left, was it a SNAFU that they weren't issued or is due to lack of demand.

I thought you meant a discussion for the record at a CA Transportation Committee meeting. I assume, if that the subject came up in one of these committee meetings, that the proper answer would have to be published on the record and thus holding back 50-100 just to prove a point would be discovered.

As far as I know, the issue wasn't brought up for discussion at the Transportation Committee. It was just speculation about why the additional/surplus SB100s appeared out of nowhere is 2009 and possibly again in 2010.

The other theory, is that the system is so broke that they hold some SB100 numbers back in case someone's paperwork inadvertently gets stapled to another person's documents. .

Doug, your statement above sounded to me like someone may (or may not) have been making this case (demand is low, so why bother increasing the #) somewhere, possibly at a committee hearing, in which case, the truth should come out.

When going through my trials and tribulations, the person who I spoke with in Sacramento (Jody gave me the number at the time) said that they do hold back numbers just in case there are mistakes made, like what happened to me.

Well I hope to be one of the guys that can still get a SB-100 number this year, rather than having to wait until next year. Still waiting on my car and the associated paperwork that goes with it, so I can start the process (the MSO being the principle document).

Like you guys mention, there was probably not the demand this year for SB-100 numbers as there has been in the past. If the number is increased from 500 to 750, as proposed in the revised SB-1740 that would be good. It may be that until the economy really turns around, there just won't be as many cars requiring SB-100, being built.

The other factor that may come into play, at least in California, is the E-ROD concept, which for some guys is the way to go. That would reduce the number of people vying for SB-100 numbers.

My hope is however, that the SB-100 program will continue to exist for many, many years to come, so that car enthusiasts that want to participate in the program have that opportunity, and the guys that want to go the E-ROD route can take that path as well.

I just received an email from my friend Eddie, who went up to Sacramento today to attend the Transportation Committee meeting. The committee voted 8 to 4 to increase the number of SB100 sequence numbers from 500 to 750. Next step is the Appropriations Committee. Sounds promising...we'll see how it goes.

For those who are ready to go through the SB100 process, don't take no for an answer. If you're anywhere in the Bay Area, don't bother going anywhere but the Santa Clara DMV (talk to Jody who is the manager).

I think it is the economy on this question for sure.

We are seeing people being more careful of spending on their hobbies.

I received SB-100 SEQ#2010117 on Jan 4th. DMV in Van Nuys issued without MSO as long as I paid all taxes and fees.

I'll be very surprised if they don't need it when you finish up registering your car post CHP and BAR visits.

Your correct, at that point I will need the MSO.
DMV paperwork states "TITLE FROM STATE OF MSO REQUIRED".

The other thing I dont get is this --

Isn't 2010 supposed to be the "Amnesty" year for all the erroneously registered Kits and Rods to come in from the cold and get all legal-beagle' >?

I had heard from a SEMA spokesperson that CA DMV has stated publicly -- that there are seventy thousand (70,000) cars in CA that are in the hands of enthusiasts -with either a wrong title , misrepresented use tax (reg fees) or other.

and--Big Momma wants her money....

That's interesting that you were able to get an SB-100 number, without the MSO (congratulations by the way ).

I thought what was needed to get a number was the following:

- MSO
- Receipt for the Engine
- Receipt for the Transmission
- A Total for the remaining costs of the build, or a realistic estimation thereof.

Doug / Rodney / Steve ... do I have this wrong? Think I can go to the Santa Clara DMV, see Jody and if there are any numbers left for this year, just write a check?

Ok, let’s kick this around one more time.
My CR was originally registered in the early 90’s. When I bought it (all taken apart), I put it in my name (no smog req). It does have a BAR sticker, but it does not say “SB100” anywhere. Do I have anything to be worried about? Do I need to go down and get a SB100 just for that warm and fuzzy feeling?

I have registered it for the last 5-6 years with no problems.

Thanks in advance,
