So the divide between 4 lug and 5 lug would be mods or track use.
i remember back when 4 lugs were current-- if we put significantly larger tires on the rear and bumped the engine up in power we might shear the 4 lugs.

I think the quick jacks are on the wrong side on the front? Seems to it was "nuts out"?

Brought it home at 2pm this afternoon. Just ran in the house to grab another bottle of water before burning another hot lap through the neighborhood. Heard these were a blast but never imagined it could be this good!

You know, I have never read a story about 4 lugs falling off in 12 years of hanging around these forums.. But you know what... I have heard of at least 2 stories about the 1 lug wheels falling off... Oh, and they were the ones that use all the new parts.
RustyBob... you do not have to use Used parts unless you choose to.
80% of the FFRs built these days use new parts.

raceral........they didnt start out that way........
it just seemed like a lot of work to tear appart a donor car to build a car
OH SHOOT.....i did it anyways.......
i will admit that mine has a few "used" parts but i didnt have to buy
a complete car to get what i needed........
and yes they have come along way since they started but i do
believe FFR advertised heavely the donor car concept.

yeah, Think about it, did you ever in your whole life hear about someone breaking off their wheel lugs and losing a wheel under any circumstance. From high school up to now in the Cobra environment, I have never never heard anyone breaking all their wheel lugs off under any form of hard driving conditions.

Correct, if you added sticky drag slicks and dropped the hammer at 6,000rpms you could sheer the lug nuts. However, I've only heard about it once, and that was a car putting out a documented 800+ HP to the rear wheels. Most of the time the U joints would snap before the actual wheel studs would break.

Or, perhaps the wheel will spin and the tire won't! That actually happened to me recently, when I mounted my new slicks on the wheels I bought from Bill (thanks Mr. Mustang I love those wheels).
One wheel slipped inside the tire on a hard launch and tore up a section of the bead. Solution? DON'T use super slippery stuff to mount the slicks on the wheels. The freakin' sidewalls are SO stiff you will want to "grease 'em up" with something to mount 'em. Don't do that, just take them somewhere and have them professionally mounted, OK? Slicks will kick your butt trying to mount them yourself in the garage.
No serious damage to the tire, but it sure was an eye opener as to the stress you can generate on the wheel/tire combo.

Very nice! Enjoy your Cobra, looks like a very clean build. IMHO, 4 or 5 lugs really don't matter, just gives you different wheel choices.

Now you have. Actually, I guess if you haven't been involved with alot of Fox body racing you wouldn't know, but this is not all that rare and is one reason why there is a booming trade in axle replacements for Fox Mustangs. Normally the axle shears before the lugs but that doesn't mean that the 4 lug format isn't crap. This just happens to be from the July 2010 issue of MM&FF.
BTW, I imagine that in your (and my) era of "highschool" everything had at least 5 lug!! LOL

Good post Steve, still, I think this is this an exceptional event as it relates to the vast majority of cars and replicas in particular. The Fox body Stang is not only heavier but is widely used specifically for drag racing purposes. No doubt slicks or very high traction tires were used in the example posted here.
Few replicas will see such torture, fewer still will be running slicks or very high grip tires. Making it almost certain tire slip will occur before a lug nut sheer condition. Certainly will never happen running Goodrich TA's, no way you could get enough traction to sheer a four lug on straight line acelleration!
But like I said earlier, IF I was seriously going racing, I'd swap out to a five lug.

That picture does not look like it was from a race vehicle. Maybe from a street vehicle that someone was trying to race. Could also be from loose lug nuts, over tightening them or both.
But hay, I could be wrong.

Eh eh, and just what does a "race vehicle" Fox body Mustang look like???
I've seen plenty of them run at local drag strips, there are tons of pictures of them on the net as well. MOST of them look pretty much stock, there an inexpensive way to go low buck racing.
I knew a guy in Honolulu that ran a fairly crappy looking old Fox body and a motor he put together himself. He was using a Nitrous shot and was pulling some amazing times with car. I asked him if he worried about blowing the motor up. He was like, "No problem, easy to find another 302, swap the bottle, start over".
Older Mustangs really are a bargain and plenty parts available.
