Mechanical Fuel Pump Install.
Getting the mechanical fuel pump off of my Roush motor is easy. Two bolts, pops right off. However, when trying to reinstall it, I was unable to compress the lever on the fuel pump that follows the eccentric on the camshaft so that I could line it up and install the two hold down bolts. I must have just removed it when the lever was fully compressed on the high point of the lobe.
Did I just happen to remove it whent he rod was fully compressed thus making it hard to reinstall?
Should I turn the motor over till the low point of the cam is even with the lever? What is the trick. I never had this problem with a fuel pump before.

Dats the way I do it, bump the motor over till it goes in easy and bolt it back up.........

Best way to bump it? Remote starter? Or with the key?

Depends, when I alone in the shop I use a remote starter bumpy thingy, when the wifey or someone else is there, I get them to sit in the car and bump it with the key while I try to get the fuel pump in.....Either way will work fine......

You can turn the engine over with the coil wire removed...no need to worry about it firing up.

Over the years, I've had to get my wife to come in the shop to "lend" a hand soo many times, she's a pro at bumping the motor over and even better at sitting in the car pumping the brake pedal while I attempt to bleed the brakes.....she can even read the dash gauges and knows when the water temp is too high or the oil pressure is too low it's time to shut it down.......
dats what happens when you have/drive junk all your life!!!!!!!!! like me........

Turn it over to TDC
The eccentric is the easiest at TDC.
It's also the hardest at TDC.
Turn it over to TDC, and try to install the pump. If it's too difficult, turn it one complete revolution at the crank - to TDC - and try again.
It doesn't have to be exact, of course.

I find a bolt the correct size & a little longer with a section of unthreaded shaft. Then I cut off the head leaving about 3/4" of plain shaft, then cut a slot in the end for a screwdriver.
If the bolt you selected has excessive thread you will also want to shorten that end to about 3/4".
Now you can screw this "pilot" bolt into the hole that is easiest to access with a screwdriver. This will allow you to slip the pump into the correct position over the pilot & keep it there with 0ne hand while installing the other bolt. When the other bolt is snugged you can remove the pilot & install the other bolt & snug up everything.

I always just put a socket on the crank bolt and bar the engine over where I want it.
