Asking "How much?"
It seems that nine out of ten people who stop to talk to me about the car always end up asking "So how much did you pay for it?" I can't stand this question and usually say "enough". Then they'll start throwing out numbers "50k, 60K?" Again, I say "enough". I guess to me the price question is a somewhat rude question unless they are really looking to buy one. Don't get me wrong, I love talking about everything else about the car. History, engine, body, performance, etc. I even like talking about it being a replica and the different companies that make replicas.
Why do people always ask how much I paid for my Cobra and does this happen to everyone or just me?

Funny,
I usually have to correct people, they all say $80-90K, I laugh and say no way, try $15K for the kit and a used mustang.

I just give a range of what replicas cost and what originals cost. I think a lot of people are just genuinely curious and arent trying to be rude (and maybe their mothers never taught them it's impolite to ask how much something cost).

Lately I've been hit with the "Did James Bond drive this car?" question. Twice in the last few weeks in fact.

I just had someone the other day ask and I told him I didn't know as I haven't added up everything! I'm a little scared to do so but I think I'm good. Probably the best answer is $45K and $100k in personal labor, sweet and blood! I agree I don't think their trying to be rude, I think their just trying to compare to something more tangible, a Corvette maybe?

Oh sure-it's how Bond gets all those hot chicks- They go wild over electrician's tape on lumpy foam!
Pure sex, your car...not like those frumpy Aston DBRs
Actually-you should tell them BATMAN and THE BOY WONDER drove it!
Aston Martin would implode if you sent them this post...

A couple of answers to the question of How Much?
1. If you have to ask you cant afford it
2. If I tell you I would have to kill you OR
3. If I told you my wife would kill me!

Give them the line that you answered an advertisment in the classifieds for an "old roadster" for $1, and when you went to check it out it turned out to be a Cobra that a jilted ex-wife was selling so her ex could take the proceeds from the sale and run off with his secretary.
Tell them that it was recent and in the local paper---if you're convincing enough they'll burn with envy. A Cobra for a Buck! Damn! A missed opportunity!

I say "Someone gives you $100,000 cash, on the condition that you can spend it on anything you want, but you HAVE to buy this Cobra. You dont have to spend ALL the money on this Cobra. How much would YOU spend on this Cobra?"

I don't think it is a rude question considering there does seem to be a lot of attention on the value of antiques/classic cars nowadays... I think for a non car person it helps to have a price tag to put it in perspective for them. I would never spend the money some people do on things like paintings, a rare stamp, comic book, sports trading card, etc...but a dollar sign does help me to see how rare or important it is to someone else. I love the "I don't know, it's my Mom's" response! I have always planned on saying "It cost more than my house...." The sad part is that it is actually true!!!

It's rude in my estimation. Might as well ask "How much did you make last year?"

I agree with FIA-ERA. I don't think most people are being rude or nosy, they're just trying to create some sort of price reference point to regular performance production cars. There's nothing wrong with giving a range like "$25K to as much as you want to spend."
I just don't think it's that big of a deal. If someone asks me, I give them the SPF website and tell them what a roller costs...no great mystery. Kirkham prices are listed as are others.

I actually do get asked that a lot when people learn I work out of my home selling tropical fish. Not trying to be argumentative with you.....I have just never felt offended..... I always answer, "Just enough to get by...but it's better than having a real job!".

No big deal. Hey we all perceive things differently. I find it rude. It also depends on how they ask it.
I'm just glad I'm not Mr. Ellison and have to answer the same question after pulling into the gas station with his Kirkham.
Doug, you know that the website roller costs may not even be 50% of the final build cost depending on how far your build goes towards originality, how much you spend on your engine or oufitting your (we/the) interior with power windows, power door locks, power steering, A/C, cupholders, dual roll bars, center consoles, stereos, etc.
